Splatterhouse - Back from the dead
« on: December 06, 2017, 04:13:31 AM »
Hello people !

Here is my very first mod : Splatterhouse Back from the Dead

I'm a big fan of Splatterhouse since I first saw the arcade game in 1988.
It's a great pleasure today to give it an homage with this mod.

I tried to add as much as possible :
  • new musics
  • new sprites
  • new sounds

All the sprites I drawn are free, use them if you want, just give me credits :)
I'd like to thank Krauser for his fine Splatterhouse trilogy, I studied his mods to create mine. ;)

cheers !

I loved the game dude! I especially like how there are more playable characters for once in a Splatterhouse game. Usually you're stuck playing as Rick in the official games.

Played a bit and good to see some original artwork. here's some feedback

Some of the offsets for the frames were a bit off but can be easily fixed with some more time and tweaking.
some animations need more animation frames (muscle version of Rick in particular)
I think you are a doing a disservice to yourself by mixing your animations with other games animations- those small zombies/skeletons in first level really stood out of place, too small and different art style.
Choose a height (and art style) for the world and make sure everything is consistent with it.
As O mentioned before get rid of the default Openbor text and lifebars etc, slowly replace generic sounds also.

Here is my playthrough of the game bro:

Most of the feedback I have is already said by brother nsw25:

Some of the positioning of the sprites were off like the enemy is on a different plane when trying to hit them.

There is sprite clashing as you used your newer sprites with the old Splatterhouse games

2010 Rick has no run animation just slides on the floor lol, so he needs more animations.

Also I believed you used the same lifebars as the older Splatterhouse openbor games did, wish you did new ones!!

I wished there was more weapons and I loved the gory death animations you had for the enemies, I wished there was more cause after all this is Splatterhouse ROLF!!

Always, it's a good game that needs a couple of fixes, and I'm glad you did something different man, looking forward to the next game!!! ;D

Cool !
First we had  Freddy Krueger, now we have Splatterhouse.

I like terror-themed beat'em ups!

I gonna try this one next weekend, wait, no it's Christmas!

But I will eventually try this for sure!

Hey mates ! Thanks for the replies and appreciations  :)
Thanks too for the suggestions, I'll try to improve this game (there will be another one as soon as I have time).
I'm a kind of a newbie in modding, and yes I definitely need to improve the offsets.
There's still a lot of work to do, but you can't imagine my pleasure to share this game with you, I wanted to create a fighting game since 30 years ...  ::) :P

Thanks to dafamily for the playthrough ! Why are the palettes busted on some enemies ? Zombygirl is totally black ... Zombies from Splatterhouse2 have wrong colors etc ... It works fine for me  :-\ I need to check this out.

btw, what did you think of the new musics ? I made every music ingame. I'm absolutely no musician ... So I don't know if it's ok ... or cheesy  ;D

I used the current build of OpenBor with this mod, I don't know if that's the reason why the colors for some of the enemies are wrong as you didn't add the OpenBor engine to download, just the .pak file!!

As for the music it's pretty good as it fits with the game, would like to hear more from you lol!!!

Rick 2010 looks a bit off, as if his body parts are all seen from different angles. Both hands are facing the screen when he idles. I realize you might have reused the hand sprite, but the arm holding the weapon looks anatomically strange, and the pose is unnatural. your arm would start hurting after a while.

I praise your efforts though, just thought I'd share that as a fellow 2D artist. Music is on point, gameplay seems to be ok, although as mentioned before, some enemies need the offsets fixed.
