One other problem with having videos is a lot of questions will be asked on the youtube channel rather than here, this is the same scenario with us having a chat room previously on the site, questions and answers get lost instead of being in the forums.  Any official youtube for openbor should probably disable the comments and direct people to an official thread for it on the forums.  Or someone is going to have a really hard time trying to moderate it and answer all the rabble.

On subject of videos,  videos won't allow people to bypass ever reading documentation.  Video should compliment documentation, bridge the gap between the two mediums.  Also a lot of people asking in the past didn't necessarily want tutorials specifically on OpenBOR, it was things like working with graphics/sprites, palettes, music etc.  That made them confused.... A lot of these things need to be understood before they even start with openbor itself.  Any tutorial should assume the user has never done anything like this before.

Just roughly...

FOREWORD

1. Introduction to Sprites/graphics
- what is a sprite?
- how/where to get sprites
- working with spritesheets..
- aligning sprites axis etc.
- where to learn more
- WEB LINKS etc

2. Palettes...
- INTRO what is a palette, how do they work etc
- using palettes(in general)
- openbor specific palette stuff

3.  Working with Audio
- working with wav files
- working with music files
- etc

4. Text editing
- using notepad / notepad+
- text formatting
- commenting
- openbor layouts

5.  Recommended and/or Required software

OPENBOR

.Initial Setup, Starting from scratch with OPENBOR.EXE
- folder structures
- required text files and assets explained.
- setting up VIDEO.TXT
- setting up MODELS.TXT
- LEVELS.TXT
- etc.

.Required Graphics
- menu, title, fonts etc

. Creating a first/test stage
- setting up graphics and other requirements
- basic stage theory explained

. Creating first character (only now after all the other stuff is done)
 - char header explained
 - animations explained
 - adding basic animations (walk, idle etc)
 - adding hitbox etc
 - creating jump, running (etc) anims
 - creating basic attacks
- continued...

.Creating an Enemy
- header
- basic anims
- basic attacks
- basic A.I

.Creating Attacks (intermediate to advanced)

.Scripts Intro
- what is a script?
- adding scripts...
- using scripts...
- basic/common use scripts
- examples of their usage
- implementation, exercise(s) using script
- where to get scripts...

.Script library
- SIMPLE cut and past script examples with concept of usage explained.

It's funny you should mention that - the videos I'm working on, are specifically about sprites, color tables, and other non-openbor specific concepts that you just have to know if you're going to make a game. This very evening I'm recording the first - it will do nothing more than explain how color tables work and how they apply to sprite work.

These are the sorts of things that video is good for. The minute you get into engine specifics, it's time to head over to wikis and other mediums. That information can get outdated quickly, and if its a video, there's no way to edit or update it.

Don't forget BTW, the new Wiki is operational. I've been putting pages into it, though admittedly it's not the most useful of information just yet. Thus far either advanced script concepts or Generic overview kind of stuff. It's the product of documenting new features as I go. But you have to start somewhere...

I really like this initiative to see some new help for new coders.
Even if I personally can't code anymore. It's really a great way to give more help to begginers and other people.

While there are some things I could see being outdated pretty quickly, there are a lot of basic tutorials that can be done for things that aren't likely going anywhere like the standard animations and character header for example.

I think you guys can handle it by:
  • Blocking comments
  • Blocking personal messages (I found about hiding the message option)
  • Putting a link to the wiki topic on the description
  • Putting a disclaimer "READ THE DESCRIPTION" on the videos themselves
I think you'll need a new channel for that.

Yep, that's it.

It won't prevent people from sending messages, but they'll need to "hack" the URL for that. It's easier to just follow the link to the forum/wiki.
