Batman Returns... on Sega Genesis/Mega Drive

Pyron and his friends are bringing the SNES game Batman Returns to Sega Genesis/ Mega Drive...with co-op!
I really liked the result so far

Nice. When you look at the SNES architecture, it isn't well suited to beat em' ups at all. Specifically the sprite size management (only two sizes allowed on screen at a time) and the kind of wonky video RAM layout. In fact, it's almost like the hardware was designed to discourage developers from making Beat em' ups! So other than color they should be able to upgrade quite a few things here and there along the way.

It's impressive how much better, more colorful and better arranged the megadrive version looks on screen.
@DCurrent : And yet, you find a quantity of good beat em ups on SNES and it is true that many of them would deserve a conversion to Openbor in order to have gaming comfort thanks to a good screen width as well as 'a certain fluidity / also correction of some boring old mechanics

After watching this trailer, I'm definitely hyped for this version of Batman Returns especially the colors and more enemies on screen plus two player co-op... This is awesome!

Volume yes, quality - ehh, for the most part not really. The Super NES can do beat em' ups of course, but that's like saying Genesis can do affine transformations. Can and can do well are very different things. It's just not good at them, and wasn't designed to be.

Catwoman could be player 2 if we want to stay within the logic of the film, otherwise I think there would be one Batman too many :D
Indeed, and that would be a good opportunity to actually have at least an alternate ending to the game if you choose catwoman.

the way i would do it is have Catwoman be a player 2 exclusive, and the ending and cutscenes would feature Catwoman alternatives if her score is higher than Batman's -
AI tools like Grok or Leonardo could easily generate stills of an alternate storyline

Enemies really could use some frame interpolation, their walk is like 4 frames... Its great opportunity to update the anims, 4 frames with small sprites is fine but with such big chars it looks like a slideshow, 8 would look better
On positive side, id love to have it as beatemup engine to try it out cause looks solid

Pyron just released a demo of the conversion and I have played it which is a 15 minute demo btw. Honestly it was quite good lots of enemies on screen and the more muted colors sort of fit the style. Still has bugs and whatnot but what I have played so far its not that bad.

I'm kind of surprised if the colors take that much of a hit. the SNES is obviously more advanced in that department, but it's not like the game really took advantage of it. From the screenshots, I actually liked the Genesis version better because of the higher contrast. Granted, you could have had that look on the SNES too, but - they didn't.

And as I went on about above, the Genesis is a much more capable machine for handling beat em' mechanics, so if they really go in it should be an upgrade overall.
