MUGEN on Linux

Hi,

i have a dream... run modern mugen module on Linux (without use wine)... source code of winmugen is still closed? It could be cool to port mugen on other platform... but... without source this cannot be done. Why not start a petition for ask the source (even with a "pay for have it", i think that i'm not the only one disposed to pay in a kickstart project to have source open!)

I swear I saw a video on youtube of MUGEN running on android so I thought it was open source.

No, the engine is closed source - for a lot of years, I wanted it to be opensource. But now I have serious doubt about it (after seeing what happens with OpenBOR).
We had requested the source many times, with no luck. As far as I know, they do gave the source for a team which was working on a commercial game with Mugen.
But I have no other info.

It uses an emulator called Exagear

Elecbyte does a lot of odd and questionable things, and that's assuming there even is an Elecbyte, but I don't blame them at all for not releasing the source. Over the years I have become quite soured against the open source model.

It's a bit off topic, but as an example several times I've considered taking the OpenBOR repository private. Yes, I can do that. The license only requires me to provide source code on request, and even then only if I'm actually using it in my own projects. Nothing at all says I have to run a public repository. SX used to run the whole thing from a private SVN with severely controlled access. The only reason I don't go back to that is it's just too late. Everyone and their dog has an OpenBOR port.

I'm not referring to anyone specific, but frankly I find the attitude about this sort of stuff incredibly hypocritical at times. When it comes to applications and code it's "Open source all the things!!!!", but touch anything they made and those same people cry foul. Don't get me wrong, open source has it's place. I just don't think it's the end all be all solution, and it's way overrated as a distribution model.

Insert "This is just my opinion" disclaimer. :)

Maybe take a look at Ikemen_go.

https://github.com/Windblade-GR01/Ikemen-GO

It seems to be working for me.

Ikemen said to be working on Linux and Mac, but I cannot make it run. It simply does... nothing.

Which OS are you running? I've compiled it on Arch and Ubuntu without any issues, and I've installed about 15 characters which all seem to work fine.

It runs with the keyboard out of the box. Setting up the joystick requires a little tinkering.

I can't say I know much about Apple products, but on Linux machines it's as simple as "make linux" "make elecbyte" and copying everything into the elecbyte directory.

Have you tried "make macos" "make elecbyte"? Does it compile successfully?

When you say it does "nothing," do you get any errors or output of anykind on the command line?

These are the full instructions:

tacodog311 I've downloaded the built MacOS version. When I say "nothing", depends of which version:
- If i try to run Ikemen using Wine, nothing really happens (and I can run Mugen perfectly on it)
- if I run the MacOS version, I got a terminal screen with "Ikemen_GO_MacOS ; exit;" and that is it.

Not sure what's wrong, but for anyone looking for an open source option on Linux, this is the latest git commit of Ikemen GO compiled on Ubuntu.
It's running the full game SFZ (http://zvitor.com/projeto/sfz.html) and seems pretty compatible.
