The fact that he is an All-American character is what could ruin him for me, as I don't like this type of character. In his case, it worked because the design was well done, his clothes are iconic (but I prefer classic clothes).
Don't get me wrong, but when I see a new character like that, I automatically lose interest. Because it's ANOTHER BLONDE WHITE AMERICAN CHARACTER - one of the reasons I don't like Luke (along with his Popeye arms). It's very cliché and this stereotype has been used too much. It's the equivalent of "princess in need of rescuing."
In Terry's case, he was created in '91, so I can give his design a pass - those white sneakers and jacket rival Marty Mc Fly's looks XD. Luke is a good balance between "Type" and "Characterization" - he's clearly a MMA type with some personality added (but I am creeped out by his Popeye forearms too).
I think it depends on how it's done, it could be an excuse or not. She has always been a fan service, her look fits the proposal. Another example is Shiki (Samurai Shodown): she uses sensuality, but the character is more than that.
I only knew Shiki from SNK Vs. CapCom, since I stopped playing Samurai Shodown around 4 - 5. The game started losing appeal to me when they kept focusing on characters and less on types. The "
Samurai vs Fencer" or "
Mayincatec vs Ninja" got displaced for more story driven particular characters.
Many years ago, there was a blog written by a guy who made a good exposition about the sliding scale between "
Type" and "
Characterisation" , focusing on chars from fighting games. I wish I could recall its name...
The big problem with Japanese developers is that they look like they are 12 years old and have never seen a woman in their lives* - they focus on that instead of focusing on more important things. Dead or Alive was a big target of this: the developers focused more on making the breasts bounce than working on the mechanics (or hand holding in the DLC).
*Clearly, whoever worked on the physics of Dead or Alive's breasts has never seen a real breast in their life and doesn't know how it behaves with physics, lol.
I agree as far as I'm entitled to, since I haven't played DOA, but many of those who had agree that is a great fighting game...overshadowed by jiggle physics
. I can say just 2 things: 1 - Mai blended perfectly when she was a Guest Character; 2 - To me, most of the female chars look like the same soulless body model with different clothes...not unlike the main char of "
Stellar Blade"...but that's a different subject.
I don't have a problem with sexy characters (of any gender), I just prefer that there is a reason and that it is part of the character, not that it sums it up.
Agree - but now it seems more and more female chars must comply with the sexyness stuff - jiggling and "risky" shots are everywhere. And when everyone's sexy...no one is after a while.
