Ripping From MAME

[TUTO] Ripping from MAME

O Ilusionista

Captain 80K
Ripping from MAME is not an easy task. I will show some ways to do it, each one has its advantages and disadvantages. Choose the one which fits better to you.

a very useful thread!!
Code:
I advise you to set the screen to its own correct size, or your rips will be blurried.
how? I always play fullscreen, I don't know how to set 1x window size reason of why I don't use animget with MAME)

Yeah!!! I really need this!!! Thank you!!!
※ But bloodbane said there is method of Ripping Sprites from Mame like Ripping Sprites from Kawaks....

Yes, there it is, its the third option. But it doesn't works for every game and it disable each TILE, not the layer. You will need to disable each tile on the layer.

Bear in mind that every game have its own way to organized the sprite layers, so there is nothing exactly Kawaks disable layers.

Thanks!
Very useful!

I'm not a massive sprite ripper, but sometimes I need a particular anim.
I'll use it for my "enemies" since I like to have them taken from uncommon games.

Hmm too bad these methods don't work with Blood Storm, or Altered Beast.  It almost works with Altered Beast but i think the game sprites are encrypted because they are not on f4.. I didn't try the artmonkey thing but that looks complicated

The user Cern_B from VG Resource game me some new cool information:

I've found a very cool MAME hack that allows dumping all the sprite maps in all available pallettes:

https://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=41610

This is a special MAME exe with additional hotkeys:

  • You just wait for the game to load properly (title screen or demo mode)
  • Press F4 to get to the gfx menu
  • Press Enter to get to the sprite view
  • Press Shift-S to write the sprite sheets (both 8x8 views, the 16x16 and 32x32 view) for all available pallettes as bmp file.
There are other write modes, but Shift-S seemed to me to be the best
