Balancing Music & SFX?

Anyone know of any tricks to balance out all of my sound and music files for my game? Currently the audio is too loud in some areas, and too low in others. I'm looking for a fast way to get them all leveled out and balanced. Worst case scenario, I'll be painstakingly going and doing them one by one.

@Skull Kingz,

Adobe Audition and Audacity both include normalization tools that can really help here. If you gather all your audio files into one place, you can batch process them to bring everything to a more consistent volume level. Normalization typically adjusts the peak amplitude of each file to a target value (usually -1.0 dB or -0.5 dB), which helps even things out across the board without squashing dynamics too much.

Quick tip: Avoid cranking up your sound effects just to make them punch through the mix. That’s a quick path to distortion and it kills any subtle detail. It’s better to normalize everything first, then bring your SFX forward using a proper mix balance. Worst-case scenario, yeah, you'd need to fine-tune files individually - but if you do a good normalization pass up front, you might only have to tweak a few outliers manually.

Good idea DC. I'm currently using Audacity, so I'll look into batch conversions on that program. Unfortunately, Adobe Soundbooth is discontinued. Thanks for the suggestion.

Sorry, I meant Adobe Audition. I still get the nomenclature mixed up in my head sometimes. Fixed my post to reflect this. :P
