IMO you should give a look at enemies archetypes in beat em ups (in terms of attack style etc)
Some can rush from far, some can grab you, some can be guarding a lot, some can jump from far, some can throw projectiles, some will attack only from close distance...

The good news is that most of it can be done absolutly without script.

Secondly: I have played and it is a lot of fun to fight with,lien, alba and kyo, lien, you have 5 freespecial and 1 special, you have not played and you look bored, I do not agree.

Third: who told you that the enemies are going to be like this? The game is based, in three parts:

Part 1 (easy level) includes basic enemies
Part 2 (middle level) includes new enemies several attacks, I have to edit about 15 new enemies, you will have abilities like: anim special, anim jump attack, anim runattack, animat grabattack, etc.
Part 3 (difficult level) enemies go with weapons, swords, etc. and add new enemies, apart, add the pshot to players who provide them with special abilities and different types of grip.

Fourth: I'm finishing v3 and starting v4, when I get to v5, the game will be finished, you'll have everything you said and more surprises, the game is actually divided into 4 parts, each part of the story that you finish, unlock the rescued character and complete the game, unlock 2 more characters, in total would be 9 characters to choose to play the story again, I do not see it looking boring. from all of this, greetings friend :)
