This is by no means a plan. It's barely a concept really. It's just the little joke title "Streets of Bad Dudes" in the opening movie of @NuMetalMessiah's The Suffering In Me kind of set off my ADHD brain and I starting thinking... Why not? As it happens, almost all of the Bad Dudes sprites are available.

I grabbed the Blade/Striker sprite sheet and gave them some very minor color separation.
  • Removed white from skin.
  • Removed skin shade from hair and shoes.
Then I experimented sticking them into some existing projects. So far nothing really fits, and I don't have the time to start up a full game, but the idea keeps floating in my head. Maybe sometime soon I'll be a bad enough dude to make something more out of it. The original assets are a very odd sprite size, but other than missing running and grapple animations, they're surprisingly well equipped for a beat-em-up considering Bad Dudes is strictly 2D side scrolling.

I'd probably add some transition frames, especially to the punches (one frame Data East, really?), but not enough change the style.

Hi DCurrent, this is a realy nice start, please continue ;) .

I think the "bad dude" you've edited could integrate the @danno Sly Spy / Secret Agent project and why not make a crossover afterwards :)

I already considered Sly Spy / Secret Agent, and at first glance it's a logical choice. SA is really just Bad Dudes 2.0 anyway. It uses the same engine and a lot of the same assets.

The problem is the themes are a total mismatch, and even though Blade/Striker are the same art style, they would need a whole new sprite sheet full of edits to work with all the SA set pieces.

I'd really prefer a beat em ep. If you can believe it, they match up very well with arcade Ninja Gaiden assets, and IMO that would be a sick crossover. Unfortunately NG doesn't have its stages ripped yet, and I just have too much on my plate to do that right now.

I think the Bad Dude is a little too big compared to Hayabusa. That's why I went more for a Crime Fighter / Ninja Gaiden crossover that pretty much follows the same standards:

FYI, you can find the Ninja Gaiden stages at Vgmaps but they need some layers / objects separation: https://vgmaps.com/Atlas/Arcade/NinjaGaiden-Round1.png

We must think alike - I'd considered an NG and Crime Fighters crossover all the way back when I first got into OpenBOR, but opted for a Shinobi/NG instead (I'll finish that one of these days). Problem with that idea is only the Crime Fighters themselves are ripped, none of the enemies. I just have too many other projects and the engine itself to worry about. I can't afford to go down a rabbit hole of MAME ripping right now.

It's true that Bad Dudes are bigger than Ryu, but so are all the NG enemies, to the point Blade and Striker match up perfectly with them (art style not withstanding).

Ryu is really just a very tiny sprite overall, almost a mismatch in his own game.

Nice, I'll have to check those out. I'm pretty good at layer separation once I have the images in hand, so maybe I'll whip up a little something just for fun. Thanks for the find!
