Leveling Up
I thought I'd address Pierwolf's question more directly - we don't have levels in the sense of a number you can see. But, we do have many ways to improve your stats and abilities. For example:
- Armor upgrades you can find as loot, or pay a blacksmith to do, which cause you to take less damage
- Magic weapons that are hidden throughout the game, which give you new or more powerful attacks (like a flame sword for example, or acid wands etc) Each class will have unique weapons and armor they can find.
- Magic items that boost your stats or abilities, such as boots which make you move faster, shields which protect you from certain attacks like poison, wizard hats that increase the speed in which your mana recharges, and as Bloodbane said some artifacts that give you more baseline health and/or mana.
- Spells and weapons you can find or purchase which give you new powers and attacks (Bloodbane made videos showing a few of these).
So like in any RPG, the character you have by the end of the game will be able to do many more things, and be much stronger than the character you start out with but depending on what you find or choose to buy, it's totally up to you.
Right now we're going through the game and hiding all the "easter eggs". If you've played Shadow Over Mystara, you're familiar with the Eye of the Displacer Beast, which if you have it, let's you find and enter secret rooms in dungeons and castles. Bloodbane did a fantastic job adding this feature as well, so we've got these secret rooms that you won't be able to find unless you have the DB Eye, and we're determining which items and artifacts to put in those rooms, versus having them as boss loot drops or in locked chests that are easier to find.
Another cool feature is that we've got spells or items which only affect certain enemies. So, for example, the Cleric character Greldon can get the Turn Undead spell. If he's fighting skeletons or ghouls and casts the spell, it kills them instantly. But it won't affect other monster types, like orcs or bugbears.
Here's a video showing some of the cleric Greldon's attacks, spells, plus the Ridable Skorpion. At the end of the video you can see him cast Turn Undead against a couple of ghouls.

My favorite item (it's in the process of being added now) is the Head of the Goblin King. First you have to earn it by actually killing the Goblin King, which is a side quest in itself. You can then pick up the decapitated head. If you are fighting goblins and pull out the head and hold it up, the goblins scream and run away ;D
