Canceled Fatal Fury Chronicles

Project is halted prior to completion and will not receive further updates.
I promised myself I wasn't going to go down the rabbit hole of smart palettes too much - especially for guest characters. But since I have plans for a Samurai Shodown game down the road, figured I may as fix Galford now and not have to re do him later. Nothing too crazy, but still enough to create some interesting looks.

Good stuff I need to experiment with this feature one day.  Joe Musashi colour is my favourite.

Thanks msmalik681! Here's two more simple ones just for kicks, Hanzou and Fuuma from World Heroes.

my favorite character from samurai showdown

Mine too Thegr8test. Too bad he was so hilariously overpowered in SSIV, they've been beating him with a nerf bat ever since. Low damage and half his moves are missing in every iteration after.

I'm practicing up in SS 2019 right now - he's pretty effective, but they pattered him after the crappy SSV Special version and he just isn't as fun to play. Dog commands are intact, but all Galford himself can do is Plasma Blade, Replica Attack, and stationary Strike Heads. No Shadow Copy or dashing Strike Heads, and the Imitate Replica Attack is impossible in normal play (6321463214 MP + HP or MP + K during hit stun). He and Hanzou are also still pretty gimped by the single kick button.

This is an interesting project, I love all palletes you did for Galford, one of my samurai shodown´¨ favorite character. I would like to see the final product. Thanks DC

Scrap the above, I just completed an all new, far more comprehensive separation. As I told O Ilusionista, I'd only meant to do a small bit of color separation. but then got carried away, lol. After playing Samurai Shodown 2019, I decided I wanted to include Galford's look from that game. That meant separating pretty much everything. He now has 105 colors, and I also added a smart palette mask. Those of you who ever played SS64-2 might remember his bust version has a mask.

Here's my first two palettes. One with, and one without the mask.

Yes, looks good with the mask on.

I would have adjusted the mask higher to cover part of the nose in the portrait.
Ingame, it's alread good.

Yeah, nedflandeurse I was thinking about that myself. After seeing your comment I definitely will. Thanks!

He looks so bad ass with the mask!
Congrats for such great job

Thanks O Ilusionista! And he should - SSIV Bust Galford is overpowered already, but in SS64-2 it's even worse! Once he puts that mask on it's absurd. Take all the BS he can pull in SSIV, except now Strike Heads can grab outstretched limbs like Zangief - and it drops 25% of your HP. Plasma Break has twice the range, it's a Dragon Punch input, you can juggle after hit, he can cancel out with a flip kick, his old Plasma Factor punch, or a half screen projectile, and all of it gets powered up when raged. Plasma Blade also powers up while raged, and stuns/juggles long enough to combo from full screen.

Just in case that isn't enough, he has a full screen flying side kick - think Raiden's drop kick but better in every way. You can use any button you want to charge it, and you can even switch them on the fly. Just start holding one button before you release the other. After five seconds it maxes out at ~40%, out priorities every other move in the game... and it's unblockable.

Still not enough? He has a hidden supper that calls down a tracked lighting bolt that does 30% and damage and sends you into the air for a juggle (you're pretty much dead). The bolt is slow, but the summoning is almost instant, and the whole time he's enveloped in a huge electric aura that will hit for the full effect if you're anywhere close. Both the bolt and aura do a crap ton of block damage and push you away. So not only is it nonpunishable, he's free to try and distract you until the bolt hits.

It's not game affecting, but he also drops the nice guy act. Half his attack shouts are "Kill you!", "Die!", "You're done!".

I have no clue what the designers were thinking. Maybe he finally got fed up with Nakoruru not giving him any and decided he was done f***ing around with people. :P

And here's Galford's 2019 Samurai Shodown default look, reflecting the minor redesign SNK gave him.

  • Sky blue dougi
  • Darker blue boots
  • Black scabbard
  • Golden metallic pauldrons
  • Dark blue body suit underneath armor

daniel, thanks but I already know all about SS64-2. Did you not see the three paragraphs I wrote about it? He'll get that set, don't worry. As for Hayabusa... ehh, probably not. It would just be another set of blue with red trim, and he's already going to have half a dozen that look similar.

Also, please scrub images and large posts when you quote them. I've edited your post to fix it.

Thank you so much for answering me! I just read above about SS64! And you're right, there are colors very close to Hayabusa already made. :)
I'm sorry for posting very large images. I already switched to minors in my previous post. Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks for letting me know.

One of the things I complain about a lot with newer Samurai Shodown games is after 2 they lost all the unique kick and throw animations (all the punch animations too, but that's another day). The 3D games restored kicks and punches, but not throws. And then they still didn't get it right because all attacks work the same and you couldn't lose your weapon. It's like after 2 they never could figure out a balance of weapons vs H2H any more and just quit trying.

So... any time I work with an SS character I want to restore that. Which means a lot of time in the drawing lab. :p

Here's my take on Galford's roundhouse kick (far light or medium kick in SS1 & 2). There's some frankensprite work, but most of it (especially in the screenshot) is hand drawn by yours truly. Functionally I plan to use it for his grab combo finisher.
