Canceled Golden Axe - The Hackjob

I don't know if you have already seen the cutscenes fron the PC Engine CD version but  they are well made. I spend a good time watching them :)
Damon Caskey: If I have your agreement, I just wanna add Super Shinobi and Chackan to your game. I have already made some news anims to Joe Musashi like an idle and walkup but you maybye have better ones than me:

There are two problems with that...

1. There is no public release. What I assume you found on Github is a very incomplete alpha. It even has the title screen from @uTunnels old GA module as a filler. I have a much more up to date private repository and won't release it until it's more to my satisfaction.

2. You must not have read all the thread -  Joe is already in the game. I even posted a sprite sheet with color separation, cleaned up sprites from the beta version of Shinobi 3, and a few of my customs.

Honestly, this kind of thing is one of the reasons I have really started to turn against open sourcing projects. I would prefer you don't put out modifications before I even get to release the original, but it's not like I could stop you. So that's up to you.

Damon Caskey: It's not a problem for me, it was just to thank you for the script for Moonwalker and help you to make progress with your project.
I won't touch any thing of your project if I don't have your agreement. I'm just curious to see some news of this awesome Golden Axe openbor mod ;)
 
This looks awesome , I just found a super early stage 1 demo of this and did some gameplay for my channel. Cant wait to play it when / if its finished , Brilliant work as usual  ;D
 
So cool, looks great. GA is one of the GOAT.  Too bad it'll probably never ever get the AAA sequel it deserves.  Although Golden Axe myth was pretty awesome.  8)

Yep. Me. Not a huge one, but I liked her playstyle. And there's quite a bit I could do with her mechanically, especially for the team moves. But whether I'm enough of one to create a sprite set for her is another matter.

Damon Caskey: Hi, Golden Axe the Hackjob is still one of my favorite Openbor project due to all the cool moves you added to our heroes.
Do you think you can release a slightly updated version for the 10 years of your first GitHub demo? :)
Please, don't let this project take dust :D .
 
!!! at those ax battler slams.. What stood out to me is the cleanness of the overall design and the in-game dialogue. Definitely would love to take a peek at the code for the dialogue portion
 
I always felt like this project would be awesome to play.
Giving Golden Axe more Deepness is great!

Eventually a comercial game remake will be created in the future.
I'm almost sure of that. sor4, turtles etc... many beat em ups lately.
 
I didn't want to post about it and jinx myself, but I actually started working hard on this project again back in December, and through most of the last semester. I used it as the basis of some class development projects, and turns out my professor was a fan of the original.

I'm still rebuilding most of the subsystems to get them just how I like, and sometimes it seems like I'm literally going backward tearing up more and more stuff rather than moving forward. Still, there has been some forward progress made. Just today I got the dialog system redone. It uses a much simpler scripting layout than the old Remake module, and also makes some minor improvements:

  • Alex uses real walking movement instead of move commands in his animation.
  • Dialog boxes have a semi-transparent background.
  • Fixed the bad grammar translation from arcade original.
  • Alex reacts differently to guest characters depending on who they are, and won't appear at all if you are using the playable version of him.

They're predrawn with an alpha mask for the transparency effect (Plombo is still the man for that feature).

I started to build a system that would pull text from filestreams and auto-size the frame as needed, but stuff like that is why I've never released a finished product. I'm trying to learn from guys like bWWd and just get it done.

kimono, most of the stuff you guys did I've already done myself in some form and they aren't really compatible. As an example, several years ago I already added Alex as a fully playable character with color separation and a complete move set. It's similar to yours in that I also used Longmoan as a base, but my Alex uses the broken sword he was walking with in the intro instead of the Ax's broadsword edit you guys are making.

I really appreciate the offer though.  :)

As you wish, the enemies are color separated here and they haven't this black outline. I just need to recolor Tyris Flare unless you have already color separated her?

I haven't finished Tyris yet, but yes, she's getting full separation - more so than the others because I'd like to use her as the base for an original guest character (Lucia Blossom from Lucia's Run).

Interesting how Lucia Blossom is a guest now. I feel like there’s a couple other SEGA characters/series, like Puyo Puyo and again Ground, that could be pulled from if you so desire. I also asked kimono about making Dora in GA1 style at one point.

My endgame plan is to cover all the mainline Golden Axe games, though not necessarily every character. For instance, Kain Blade, Kain Grinder, and Stern are basically clones of Ax, so I won't include them as individuals, but Ax has moves inspired by all of them. Same thing for Tyris and her clones. But unique fighters like Dora will get brought in. The total lineup should look like this:

  • Ax Battler
  • Tyris Flare
  • Gillius Thunderhead
  • Alex
  • Dora
  • Chronos Lait
  • Proud Cragger
  • Death Adder (Note both the boss and playable forms are based on arcade Revenge of Death Adder where he also has a magic shield)
  • Skeleton Warrior

Possibly some of the other bosses. I made a playable Bitter already, but not sure if he'll stay in the lineup.

Guest fighters:

  • Joe Musashi
  • Lucia Blossom (original character)

My choices aren't really about franchises, but more about the art, animation style, and fighting moves seguing properly with general theme and gameplay. That's why you won't see much from Golden Axe The Duel. It's not a bad game or anything, but stylistically they went way off the rails compared to the rest of the series.

Sounds like a good lineup to me. Pretty balanced selection of Warriors. Even if I could try some tests with toning Jamm down to GA1 style with some redesigns of her, I can see why Duel and Beast Rider are largely sidelined. And a full moveset for the skeletons? Neat!
