:ROFLMAO:

In all seriousness, while I certainly love the praise, all I'm really doing is aping Capcom's CVS art style and miniaturizing it. On that note, here's an in game test of the new shading work.

Looking good so far :)
While you are studying pixel art, there is a not so easy technique which may worth looking at - Subpixel Animation

SNK artists were a beast with that

This is a neat example: this animation has just ONE frame. All the animations are made using subpixel

Funny you mentioned that. I've tried that technique before (didn't know the proper name though). The problem I kept running into was for me, it just ended up looking like pixel flashes, artifacts, and shading errors.

I've looked over the tutorial and tried again, as this would be a good idea to get a bit of transition into Valis's rear arm. Here's the result, and also shows all three clothing options in game:

And here's another touch. Little bit of body sculpting, and some sub pixel breathing. I'd tried these before but didn't like them... now they're growing on me. Bruh... if you don't have abs that show through armor... do you even lift?

For Valis it's probably a superfluous detail, but may be more important for his brother Ronnel, since he doesn't a paldron to break up the body outline:

Took a little break from class work and made a tiny bit of progress. I've been dreading the walk cycle more than anything - it's going to be a long slog getting it right. The legs are giving me fits atm, but I knew they would.

This is where CVS style is tough - I just don't have the artistic ability to get the overhead light source right on certain poses, and I absolutley refuse to use that amatur hour King of Fighters color banding crap. So... Trail and error...

What a terrific walk cycle! The way Valis walks reminds me of the heroes from Knights of the Round, especially Arthur. I feel like the environment for him being in the game is more like playing Knights of the Round and Dungeons & Dragons combined! Hack & Slash arcade nostalgia there!!
