Classic Fantasy (ClaFan)

In Progress ClaFan - Classic Fantasy 1.66

No permission to download
The project is currently under development.
But I have no idea how to script a store or anything like that.

That's tough system to make cause you have to define inventory and status system first WHICH would have affected other aspects as well

However, I must say that since Clafan uses simple sprites, it is easier to add weapon & armor system allowing characters to buy and change those :)

I thought of making some kind of powerup system, with weapon models that have better stats + a weapon palette swap. Once I implement containers/grass that spawns items in-stage, I'll work on that too.

Man. I haven't coded anything in OBOR for at least two months. I have a thousand and one ideas, but almost zero desire to do anything with them. Law school burned me out so bad that all I want to do is hang out with friends and play video games. Even when I finally do sit down and try to make some frames, I give up after five frames or so and switch to Youtube instead. :P Don't worry, I'll be back to normal soon. I hope, at least!

something like Knights of the round would be a good idea

don't put pressure on yourself and just come back when you are ready. I was like one year absent of lavalit, around 2010.

Someone said she likes plumbers and hedgehog, someone also said that he is a toys R us kid, I think it was me XD

I don't know if you're still interested in new sprites (suppose it's even less now that you have little time to code), but the Final Fantasy for mobile phones (FF Dimensions) has awesome character sprites, with each hero changing according to class (and there's a lot).
I just don't know if they have been ripped yet.

:)

Way ahead of you, actually. I was looking into both FF Dimensions and FF All The Bravest for the longest time. If they were fully ripped, then I would have gone ahead and made either more characters or ClaFan Advanced (16-bit characters/enemies, oh joy!)

Sadly, no sprite rips yet.  :-\ Or at least, no full sprite rips. Just stills of each characters/class' idle pose. And we both know I can't do much with that.

And onto a more "real talk" kind of point: do I even need more characters? I'd happily make more (at least the entire NES FF2-3 crew), but I wouldn't want to get to a point where I have 38 characters and still 8-9 stages. When I get my BOR inspiration again, then I'm going to focus solely on new enemies and stages. Once I have a bigger world to explore, then I'll turn around and make more people to explore it with.

Its a java game? if it so, send me the game and I can rip from it.

Android and Iphone game respectively. Now, Android .apk's are literally renamed .zip's, but apparently Square-Enix stores the sprites in either a proprietary format or on their own servers. So IIRC, you can't just open it up and have fun. :/ The current rips available were done from screenshots.

Also, I could link them to you to try and rip it anyways, but... since both games are paid apps and are still on their respective marketplaces, I don't want to get in trouble for linking to wares. Needless to say, a quick Google search of "[game name] apk + data" will bring it up.

Hmmm.. I thought the sprites would be hard to get. (There are tons of them, who'd have the patience to screenshot all of them without a specific goal?)

Fair Point. But that "Advanced ClaFan 16bit" idea has now been imprinted in my mind, and it's all your fault.  ;D

I'm sure it'd be much nicer to look at than the current ClaFan, but right now it'd just be a waste of everyones time to sprite-swap everything. ;D Besides, it's kind of fun to take 16/32-bit sprites and "NES-ify" them. Almost a challenge. Plus, don't you think the "8-bit everything on 16-bit stages" aesthetic is charming in its own right? I suppose I can sit down one day and "NES-ify" all the stages, but we'll get there at another time and day.

So anyways, I know I'm about to win the BS-of-the-year award, but remember when I said I'm solely going to work on stages and enemies? Yeah, well...

Say hello to the next addition to our family. "But NickyP," you may be thinking, "isn't he kinda pointless?" Not so much. Sure, White Mage can heal everyone and Red Mage is a good fighter that can heal himself. But Paladin has more HP than both of them and better close combat options with his other Chains. The downside is, Paladin has poop MP and his team-heal is less effective than Red Mages self-heal. Still, Paladin is meant to allow co-op players who want to be supportive like the White Mage the alternative of being a little more offensively competent as well. Over-powered? Time will tell.

Oh hey, speaking of time. This is the next character I'm making:

More to come later on.

Double-post, whoa hoa.

Since my last post, I was thinking about it. Maybe I should "NES-ify" the stages as well, to give the entire mod an 8-bit feel. So I tried my hand at it.

To the left are the stages as they originally appear in the game. To the right, 8-bit-ish versions. The Fighter is placed on both of them to give you a better idea of what it would all look like when it's over.

Thoughts?

Ahhhh.... Now I see that you can "NES"-ify the stages. How about "NES"-ify the music? LOL The edits look nice though and it has an 8-bit feeling of it. :) I think you may need help with editing some stages if you work alone, Nick. I do like your style though. ;)

That. Now obviously I can use Synthfont and the ultimate 8-bit Soundfont to do that to midis. But ClaFan doesn't use any midi music, all of it is ripped game music. If I were to change the soundtrack, I'd have to change almost the entire soundtrack. This is because a lot of the songs I'm using come from games for which no midis exist. Yuusha 30 Second, Rosenkreuzstilette, Grandia II, Ikkitousen Xross Impact, etc etc. There's 37 different songs in ClaFan, and replacing all of them would be a pretty huge task.

Besides, do you any of you want an all 8-bit soundtrack anyways? I'm sure it'd make ClaFan a more "complete" package, and games like Phantom Breaker and Scott Pilgrim show that modern 8-bit music still sounds cool. But like I said, it'd be a lot of work, and something I'd only consider if a whole lot of people wanted it.

Hmmm.... personally, I prefer more colors but for harmony with sprites, I agree with this NES-ify stuff :)

Aaah, my most favorite class ever: Paladin. Great!

I went ahead and NES-ified every stage in the game with very mixed results. Sometimes it looked absolutely perfect:

And then other times it would come out absolutely terrible:

I think for now I'll continue with the 16-32bit stages. If you want to experiment and try the  NES-ified stages yourself, then you can download them here: http://www.mediafire.com/?cbvlry9a6xpv36m

Paxplode ClaFan 1.48, and unrar the "Bgs" folder into ClaFan's "data" folder. Be sure to overwrite everything --do NOT delete the current Bgs folder and replace it with the new one!--

I still prefer the 17 bit style. Because -for me- just taking out colors doesn't make it 8bit at all... To be 8 bit the stages will need to have a different graphic style.

This is true. However, for no-talent sprite editors like yours truly, reducing the amount of colors and darkening the borders is close enough. It works fantastic for character and enemy sprites, but not so much for stages...  :-[
