I think that's the job of scripts. Graphic manipulation functions, such as scaling a allocated screen (which is what zooming is about), are already in script, it's just a matter of coding it to tailor your needs.
Although the current method for zooming is still prevalent, it's still a mess. A little more improvements to it would help, maybe implementing some methods by Illusionista and White Dragon here regarding sinusoid motion in script.
It would be nice though that it would be hardcoded directly as a feature.
