Marvel First Alliance 2 Review by Hanzo
Author of the mod: Zvitor
Marvel First Alliance 2 is a more comphrensive update to the original MFA 1 with more playable characters, new and improved enhancements to current roster of the 30 heroes and villians along 22 additional heroes and villians to join which makes a total of 52 characters to choose from. 9 modes to choose from which 7 of them you'll have to unlock by beating the story mode several times to unlock them. An addition to the huge roster of characters, there also NPC helpers to help you along the way to thwart the onslaught of cannon fodder of thugs to sentinels to nazi robots in nine levels of good old fashioned beat-em up to aerial combat.
Story 4/5
The plot of the game is like came straight from the comic books, Red skull and Hydra start to terrorize the citizens around the world with villiany and self-gloating and is up to the Avengers, Fantastic Four, and the uncanny X-Men to stop Red Skull and his rogue gallery of villains from world domination. It's a simple premise but it works well with the game. It's not a super duped up blockbuster type of a plot but a straight to the point story taken essences from the Marvel lore and literature.
Control 5/5
The controls feels tight and fluidly responsive if you playing on a keyboard or joystick controller, you can feel each punch, kick, stomp, or a straight optic blast from the visors on your controllers or keyboard. No awkwardness or ghosting on the movements of your joystick.
Gameplay 5/5
Now to the meat of the review, the new gameplay mechanics using scripts and editing software breathes the game new life thanks to various contributors in the OpenBor community. Each hero or villian has seven different stats ranges from power to range with varying degrees who can dish out more damage to fly out of harms way. Also each character has been improved and reconditioned with jumping and running attacks, flight movement, and blocking incoming projectiles or melee attacks. Also the bosses and sub-bosses have also gotten the same treatment as well as the heroes so this time it will be a tough and challenging journey. I also like how each character is different and varied like Iron Man can shoot out grenades and repulsor lasers afar and Spider-Man can use his spider-sense to counter-attack enemies if they get to close. And Hulk plays like Hulk HULK SMASH!!!.
Sound/Level Design 5/5
When the first MFA was released it was using some of the default BOR sound fx which is not working with the game. Now with all new sound FX and musical scores taken from the classic games from the SNES brings the game into new heights when you charge head on with Iron Man or tossing the shield from Captain America you can metallic sound crunching the enemies faces or that thunderous electric strike from Thor's Hammer is really awesome. also the level design looks ten times better before with all new stages and some got visual effects like shadows and lighting FX.
Replay value 5/5
There is so much replay value in this you'll have endless hours of fun with the 52 characters and the unlockable modes to choose from. So whether to do a solo run with one character or you like to mix it up with different strategies with certain ones you can do that to own leisure.
Overall Score 5/5
Zvitor really outdid himself of creating one of the best Marvel mods in the OpenBor community with help of talented sprite editors and members like Bloodbane and Q Illusionista. 52 characters, 9 modes of play and a crap ton of replay value, you will have endless hours of quality 16-bit era enjoyment out of it.
