Photoshop help (White to transparent)

This is an artwork themed question.

Hello,

I made a mistake working on a transparent layer and made it white by merging it with the white background.
I have no backup of the most recent work step.

I'd like to make the white transparent IN the file, not by product-type blending mode.
I'd like the purer the white, the more transparent, and the more color, the more opaque.

Do you have any suggestions?

I'm sure it's possible, but I have no idea.
(once again, the file alone must be transparent (gif, PNG...), not just in photoshop).

ah so its not a pure black and white, but a gradient one?
You can duplicate the image, convert to black and white and use it as a mask of the original one
