Running OpenBOR games on the Steam Deck

Hello, I recently downloaded a few openbor games including Metal Slug Counter and MOTU Eternian Battle. I have tried a lot of different versions of proton, but the results are the same: the openbor logo pops up,then I see a "hit enter" prompt, then I hit the enter button, and the gane stops.

Does anhone know how to fix this, and be able to play full games?

Welcome to the forum @dreamtime, Proton? I've never heard of it, I could try having a look at the files but it could be a number of reasons as to why it's not working, I would only download games from Chrono Crash.

Who is the author of Proton?

Hello, and thank you for the welcome. Proton is a feature of the Steam Deck that allows it to run games which are native to windows. The Steam Deck runs on the linux operating system, and cannot run windows games natively.

@dreamtime you don't need to run OpenBOR on Proton, as there is a native linux port.
The question is: OpenBOR is an engine, not an emulator. This means you need to use the same build the author used to develop the game, or you can face issues or even don't run at all.

Look for "OpenBorLog.txt" inside the "logs" folder where you installed openBOR. It will tell you what happens, most of time.

an option available is to use a batocera USB on the steamdeck -
thing is... the games are going to run using wine - either lutris or proton and as mentioned earlier - it is necessary to use the openbor version the developer used to run certain games, that means that some older games need older versions of openbor or in rare cases rare versions of the engine that are windows executalbles only -

running the games on batocera takes some preparation (you need to create an autorun.cmd file to run windows games)
, systems:windows [Batocera.linux - Wiki]

and too bad i dont have access to a steamdeck, but i assume that there may be a similar requirement or process to run them

HELL even linux versions of games need some prep -
example: even tho batocera is a linux system, the linux port of "starship" needs users to create an .SH file (starship.sh)

@Notsoslime & @dreamtime

found a couple of videos with more info - 1st video seems to show that certain executables can only run on linux desktop mode

the second video seems to show some extra steps and some additional downloads you can use to get abandonware type games running

I had the same freeze on the Steam Deck until I switched to the flatpak version of OpenBOR and set the game folder permissions to read and write in Desktop Mode. Proton didn’t help, but that combo finally stopped the crash after the logo. While testing, I grabbed a cheap key from https://www.cdkeysforgames.com/games/steam-games/hades-2/ for a break, so at least the troubleshooting session wasn’t a total drag.

Hi everyone, sorry for not replying in so long.

I found the source of the problem I was having, and it's really kind of embarrassing to admit. The button I was pushing (either A or Start, I can't remember) was automatically mapped to the Escape keyboard key. Oops. :ROFLMAO:

Anyway,i want to thank you all for replying and trying to help. This is a great website, and a great forum.
