Hi All,

Just joined CC and have had a little browse and not quite sure what I'm doing to be honest...

Would anyone be able to point me in the right direction?

Basically, I am on a course at the moment and we have a teamwork task to create and design a Video Game.

I came up with an idea and everyone just wants to roll with it, so we have been brainstorming and designing and stuff, but want to take it to the next level and REALLY make the game.

I love retro games, still own my Sega Master System and Sega Mega Drive and have the XBox 360 and Nintendo Wii as well as DSi. Bit of an online gamer as well but where programming and development go, I haven't a clue!

I want to create a side-scrolling, beat 'em up over 6 levels loosely based on Streets of Rage obviously without breaking any laws over copyright etc, this is purely for personal use during a presentation in 5 weeks time at the end of the course and for the satisfaction of bringing what started as a 'silly' idea to the best presentation/game that I can possibly make.

I do not expect full instructions but if anyone can advise on where to go, how to start and how to make things work on screen, it'll be most appreciated.

Thanks in anticipation and advance,

Hi!!

I recommend you to start editing an existing mod, this way helps you to understand better how the engine works.
These 2 manuals are a Have-to-read:
http://dcemulation.org/index.php5?title=OpenBORManual
http://www.caskeys.com/arc/games/openbor/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page
and then check Beastie's Helpful links here:
http://www.chronocrash.com/forum/index.php?topic=13.0

which what you learned there, you can start editing and learning.

about what can you use, I personally use notepad for the characters txt files, and Obeditor/Openborstats to check the hitboxes and bboxes.

you can also try PalApply for applying palettes on batch.

Getting a fully functional game in 5 weeks time would be pretty hard.  It can be very time consuming.

Set some small goals, create a playable character, basic enemy/enemies and a stage (or two).

Is better create one cool game with just one stage instead of 6 stages rushed game (5 weeks is too short + lack of experience + team work sometimes is harder than solo development)

split the team into:

someone to create characters  ( he will create players, enemies, bosses)
someone to create stages ( he will create background, screen objects, and will be responsable to put the  enemies and bosses into the stage)
someone to create hud title screen and fonts and such

if everybody have artistics skills each one can do the art of his own part, if there is only one artist while he does the art assets for the game  the rest of the team can continue the tasks using temporary sprites to avoid lose time with unespected snags in the project

The most cool part of sor series i think is the throw system, but it is already the hardest part to code too.

Openbor is like to learn to drive, you need time to pratice and you will become better everyday. but without pratice is like to be a Sunday driver

good luck with your project and welcome to chrono crash :)

Thank you all so much...

I shall have a read of the manuals now I've sorted child, mowed lawn and had dinner  :P
