Spoilers warning...
It's been years since I was really hyped about a game, but when FF7 remake was announced I was right there screaming shut up and take my money...
I'm here to say it lived up to expectations in every single way... then some. The only nitpick I could possibly find is that while your enemies are loaded with grappling moves - you have none. Tifa even lost her Suplex type limit breaks (she's a beast otherwise though...). Elsewise the combat system has incredible depth. Take the the already crazy materia system from original, then tack on Devil May Cry style techs and tons of weapons with learnable abilities. Now add four characters all with their own unique and fun playstyles. On top of all that, there's a hidden cancel system the game never tells you about. With practice you can pull off combos that make MVC series look like amateur hour. Or you can just put everything in auto mode and manage it like the old game.
I won't even get into how much I love all the expanded story elements. I'll admit there's a bit too much anime cliche here and there - particularly the old "grunt and nod" trope, but otherwise the dialog is well written and the voice actors nailed it. Lot of people are ticked about the timeline changes, but I like them. IMO it's not "better" or "worse" than the old game, just an interesting twist that gives the writers some freedom and to fix a few of the weird plot holes and bad translations.
Anyway... at one point in the game, Aerith delivers a vicious and cathartic chair shot. I think she has a promising career in the WWE, and just had to share it with y'all...
