OpenBOR on SNES MINI

Here is OpenBOR running on a SNES Mini. As the author had explained,
I am actually running this on an NES Classic/SNES Classic, using the PPSSPP Emulator.  That is the only way to run ones after 2004.  Ones 2004 and earlier can be run another way, which I also need to do a video on.  The Dreamcast you see is merely artwork!  The native Linux port, unfortunately will not currently work with NESC/SNESC.

Here is how to run OpenBOR on a SNES mini
 
Well this is using a psp port of the OpenBOR engine and it runs inside the ppsspp emulator which then runs on Snes mini. And as you can see it runs very very slow.

Here i do the same, running the OpenBOR psp port via ppsspp emulator on the newest ipad ipad pro, which normally does have the power to run fine OpenBOR fine. But since OpenBOR is runnin inside from another emulator and not as a direct ios port, as you can see the performance is still poor:

So there is no wonder that the OpenBOR psp port is running even worse  on that weak a** snes mini  ::)

Realize I'm a bit late to respond, I don't mean to annoy anyone I just reckon'd y'all might be interested.

I stopped messing around with RetroPie when Recalbox came out because for the most part RetroPie is a mighty pain in the ass and you never have to fool with such nonsense in recalbox. So I guess what I mean to say is if you've someone trying to get OpenBOR on a Pi running smoothly but you reckon them a bit dumb or lazy tell them about this, it's easy as moving files from directory A to directory B.

On Recalbox you have to do absolutely nothing special for the newest version of the PSP port of OpenBOR to run through it's ppsspp emu core. Just drop the folders and pbp into the psp folder and jango you're off.

I don't have any issues running any games, but I only just tried it after reading this thread yesterday, so I've not tested it very thoroughly but I can tell you it's fine with multiple paks in the pak folder and the emu tools like fast forward etc work. I don't think the Pi has the memory for rewind so I didn't muck with it, but savestate, frameskip, turbo button etc no issues.  The only thing I can report as an issue at the moment is I can't screenshot, but to be fair I didn't try very hard. I hit the recalbox macro and when it didn't work I just moved on.

It's exactly like running OpenBOR through ppsspp on your PC except the Pi is weak so you probably can't take advantage of anything that requires a lot of mem.

If y'all're interested I'll keep mucking about and tell y'all the differences in how OpenBOR runs on the different Pi platforms. Outside of that I don't reckon there is much else I could say on this subject.

I can't speak for the community of players who are interested in running it through an emu because I've never spoken to anyone else.

For me personally I have two interests in it.

The first reason is just because I'm a tinkerer. I just noticed the psp port one day while looking through the forum. For whatever reason prior to this I didn't even consider looking at other ports and what not. I became curious how OpenBOR would boot on a psp and of course when I looked I saw the eboot.pbp. I'm not the most advanced user so many it isn't so much but I thought that was kind of neat and clever and it made me curious if emus could handle running a pak so I loaded it into ppsspp for windows and it ran just fine. I meant to run it through a playstation emu too but I never got around to it. I'm pretty sure it'd fail, but I was just curious and now that it's brought up I'm curious all over again so I'll probably to that some time today. After messing with ppsspp I forgot about it for some time until I saw this thread and thought I reckon'd I knew a right easy way so I set to it and told y'all about it.

The only other reason would be presentation. Limiting down a linux to just a custom boot screen with a game library as the GUI and all that jazz is pretty much what retropie, recalbox, piplay, lakka, etc are. My pi emu box that I use is in a demon skull case I made myself, it has a Jason Voorhees splash screen, when it's booted you're greeted by a horror themed emulation station and a well curated selection of horror roms, isos, hacks etc. Some of the roms you can't even download online if you wanted, they have to be bought from the creator's website and dumped yourself.  Funny thing is I'm not even a huge fan of horror, I just thought slaystation was a cool name for a playstation emu box and went from there.

With OpenBOR running on recalbox I'm pretty much going to reskin recalbox with your and the other great pak maker's work. Like the banners you make for Gamejolt or some such similar. Instead of launching OpenBOR on a general system the entire box from the case through the gui to the library itself would be all OpenBOR stuffs. There's no real point. It's just kind of neat to look at, and it's kind of cool to have the entire experience prior to playing pak be hyping you up to play the pak. Blue dragon bootscreen for sure.

I see. But you would losing performance doing so, no?
I dunno how the PPSSPP emu work - do it limit the memory to the same of PSP has or it has no limit?

 
PPSSPP emulates the same memory from the later PSP 2000 and 3000 which was 1gb if I'm not mistaken.
OpenBOR port runs very slow and slugish on PPSSPP, probably because PPSSPP is more fit for emulating actual PSP games and the hombrew emulation side was simply proof of concept that never really got polished. I mean it can run the Cave Story port with decent speed and minimal sound jitter but that's pretty much it.

OpenBOR on SNES mini, running from a PPSSPP Retroarch core from the looks of that video does not really look that much enjoyable either. The framerate performance is garbage even trying to run the original Beats of Rage mod. I really can't picture anyone enjoying that past the first minute of gameplay.

Basically enough, direct ports of OpenBor on official hardware are the best way to go.
An Emulator of a console running a port of OpenBOR is not recommended because of slow performance issues.

On the PC I didn't notice any difference, but there's absolutely no reason to run openbor on a pc through ppsspp so after I tested it I didn't continue to use it. I just thought it was neat and moved on. I guess for interest I ought to note I am talking about ppsspp stand alone not the retroarch ppsspp core. On PC through retroarch's ppsspp core I couldn't even get it to boot openbor, it just crashes.

On Pi, oh boy does it ever! I turned on multithread and that seemed to be the ticket but I've not really had time to mess with it so maybe I just got lucky. it plays the levels at proper speed and everything looks and sounds fine when playing but it makes every screen that isn't a level way too fast. recalbox's ppsspp core comes with the speedhack preset to on and I've not had the time to monkey around with those to see if I can get it running any better. It runs better on pi than the mini, but not it doesn't run properly.

Like I said I only just messed with it, seen that it works, and told y'all about it. I've not had time to learn and tell y'all it's limitations. A direct implementation like RetroPie or Lakka is more ideal that's I why I said this was the lazy/stupid man's easy way to play OpenBOR on Pi.  When I was speaking about building a openbor recalbox that was meant with the understanding that I actually get recalbox to run OpenBor properly. If it plays properly, is easy to set-up, and most of the time I spend working on it is in the case and graphic art I don't see a reason to use a direct port. If I can't get it to run worth while I'll not put in all that effort into presenting the games like that. I never have built an openbor box, but I have been thinking about it for about a year or so. Probably the best thing would be a cheap PC, but if a few tweaks on ppsspp recalbox pi combo actually works that'd be the quickest and easiest route.
 
I had some time to mess around with my pi, openbor, and ppsspp a little more today. I was able to get recalbox ppsspp to run openbor smoothly, but It seems to me ppsspp limits how long you can run openbor. After you get through the first level, either at the beginning of the second or near it, ppsspp will start running like how you see on the snes mini. Just terrible. 

Same for PC, if you load a game and kill a couple baddies it looks fine and plays fine, I even used the rewind function on it with no problem, but keep playing it'll get to the point where it looks like the snes mini in the video in same time. Right around the start of the next level you're going to be running like snesmini in the video.


It's a neat bit of neat serendipity that OpenBOR and PPSSPP work together as much as they do, but that's all it is. I don't think anything of value can come of it and I would not be surprised if getting OpenBOR through PPSSPP to work properly isn't a much bigger and more complex pain in the ass than just getting OpenBor to work. Even on a platform like a snesmini where they don't have a direct port or implementation of a port. It's exciting to see a promising result quickly, and ppsspp will give you that, but that's a pretty telling disappointment that follow just as quickly.

Raspberry PI does not use a "normal" linux. The Raspberry PI, Snes mini, etc have a ARM CPU, the "normal" linux distros like ubuntu, debian, fedora, etc are made to run in x86/x64 CPU and they don't run in ARM CPU.
All ARM CPU devices need a special linux version compiled for ARM CPU (for example raspbian), is similar (but no the same) the diferences between windows phone and windows PC.

When you try to compile Openbor for ARM linux, the more important  problem is a lot of dependencies, needed for Openbor, are not officially supported by ARM Linux. Among other problems that are more difficult to explain
