Hey guys! This game is a prototype of an old project started in 2018, I think now is the time to improve it.

Credits for all assets goes to the author "Robert Norenberg 0x72" in the "itch.io" page. He authorized the use of any content, modified or not, for any purpose including a commercial project.

This is a very basic game, I'm not planning to make something too big (for now) with a lot of stages, cutscenes, etc. The focus is on the game's mechanic and the player will need to use some strategies to survive every enemy wave.

I know that the game needs a lot of improvements, and I will make it along the time. I need to remember that it is NOT a remake of any game, it is 100% original. The sprites are free licensed and maybe this can be my first commercial project in OpenBOR. I got some RPG elements present in most games, but the mechanic is new. I had inspiration from games like Gauntlet (played it too much) and MMO RPGs like Tibia, Lineage and Ragnarok.

I know that it's different from SOR2X, but the complexity of the scripts in this game helped me to improve SOR2X codes a lot. It contains a tons of status changers, different weapons, armors, randomized items, levels, obstacles and enemies.

I hope you enjoy, and any idea or suggestion is always welcome :)

Here's a demo:

Hi
I really like your work and your game, so excellent <3
I will try it, it seem really fun :)
The only thing i'm not really fan are the backgrounds ... not really beautiful, always same ... but it will not be the harder to upgrade :)

I share the Darknior advice, the graphics can be improved, the shadows on the walls seem to be not correct.

I wish to continue to work with you in any of your project (because I like to work with you :) ) and can provide full customs graphics for characters and stages.
I think that you can continue to improve the programming in SOR2X too and one day this can become a commercial beat em up, with a new story, gfx and sfx.
If you are ok, we can first finish the main content in SOR2X (the main SOR1 route and some alternatives routes) and then work harder on this project (if you accept my help).

Darknior
Thanks dude, I will improve the backgrounds in future versions. I admit that the graphics is not the best part of this game ;D but my intention is to do something near that. Of course, I can improve the background and other graphic content along the time but I need to maintain the same graphic style from the original author to avoid a possible sprite style clash.

In fact it will be a very simple game, and using this sprite style I can edit it myself. Would be good to have the help of some great spriters like kimono and 16-bit Fighter.

Thanks buddy, your help is always welcome  :). Don't worry about SOR2X, this will continue to be my main project and after everything is finished we can use the same structure to develop a commercial beat em up game using 100% original sprites.

16-bit Fighter and nedflandeurse
Thanks man!

Kratus i love the sprites :)
It's really a good idée :)
I only think backgrounds can be updated, but i don't really know how, where to found some good ideas ...

Darknior: I don't think it's a great problem to change efficiently these backgrounds or players.
Some good questions could be, for example: Who is the owner of the castle? In which piece of the castle are we?
The same for the enemies or the playable characters, we can give a identity to them. Ex: The Knight could be a king, wearing a lion armor and a crown.

One cool feature I wish to appear in an Openbor game:
1) In select screen, we can choose the playable character and the NPC allies.
2) We can switch ingame to another playable character. In this example, Knight is selected; he switches to Archer playable or Wizard.
Archer or Wizard is killed, replaced by a playable version and a Knight NPC spawns to replace the previous playable character:

The playable character respawn at the exact place of the NPC Archer or Wizard, the same for the Knight NPC. The respawn and character switch can be protected by a small explosion and can consume mp to prevent the overuse of this mechanism.
3) I'd love to have a tag team Knight - Archer - Wizard. The player can give orders to the 2 others NPCs:
- "Stay where you are!" To activate buttons (player in one button and then character switch)
- "Attack!" The NPCs will become agressive and move towards the enemies
- "Support!" The NPCs move near the player and give an attack boost (Wizard NPC), heal the team (Archer NPC), protect the team (Knight NPC)

No problem buddy, any feedback is always welcome, it helps me a lot to improve any project. Would be good to see your suggestions.
In fact I started this project thinking in a very simple game for Android devices, some kind of a "Flappy Bird" only to pass the time killing some grunts and have fun  ;D

But I had another ideas along the time, I made a second prototype like an "Open World" game but I had some problems with the camera. But now I have more knowledge of the OpenBOR and think that it's possible to manage that.

The mechanic is also complex, even if the actions and animations look simple. I added a lot of "good" and "bad" status changers, weapons, armors, damage calculation, etc. As I said before, my main inspiration is the Gauntlet game, more precisely the Master System version.

Are all good ideas, we can test it along the time

its a complicated situation.
Please interpret this objectively, I am not saying this with bad intentions XD (and dont want to sound as a bootlicker/toady) XD

You are like goku in the majin buu saga . After years of training you got better and better , learning new techniques and reaching new limits. But in the beginning of that saga, goku was death so he wasnt in the front line.

In the real world, you are getting better and better programming for openbor, polishing Sor 2x more and more, at the point of beating Sor remake gameplay-wise. Even to the point of receiving an invitation to be an engine dev (from ilusionista and DC )

We, sor fans have the luck that you are a sor fan too, because if you werent a fan of Sor, you would have spent time making a fangame of another saga, and Sor 2x would not exist.
Sometimes there are fans of videogames with a lot of good intentions but without the ability of making something because of the lack of ability/skill.
You understand how the gameplay of Sor works, and you are good at programming too, a winning combination.

The thing is that if you start developing a new game, you will focus less time in Sor 2x.

But if i think about it, its understandable. Working so many years in the same thing would burn out anyone.

So another project would be good to rest a little of Sor 2x when you feel the need.

I hope that this project reach success  ;)

It's such a honor to be compared to Goku  ;D

Don't worry man, I totally understand you. In fact this project was stopped in 2018 and I'm not doing any change on it yet. I post it here because it would be good to know the community's feedback. I trust that the ability to hear, understand and deal with the critics is the key to the growth.

So, I'm prepared to hear even the negative feedback because it helped me a lot to improve my projects, including SOR2X. A negative feedback can be a good teacher sometimes.

Backing to the game, my focus will continue in SOR2X. This Mini Knights game is an easy way I found to make a first commercial project, this is why I choose simple sprites, I can edit them by myself.

My goal is to make a Beat 'em up commercial project someday, but I need to walk step-by step.

You are gaining more ki to reach SSJ god level XD, you are at ssj3 at the moment.

being serious, will be exciting to see what kind of beat em up you will make.
But i would say that you need to start looking for a team of sprite artists. Kimono can do characters but you will need people that can make stages sprites too. its a shame that i cant do any of that.

This will sound stupid, but that will be the same as the the tournament of power arc putting together a team to compete  8) (im such a dragon ball nerd, sorry  ;D )

I understand you man, but it's too early to decide anything. Was good to know the opinion of the community, and as soon I decide something about this project I will share here.

I like this kind of games, they are more diversified, and I have played many similar games. I think you will do better. Looking forward to your work.

I can't promise anything and for now and I have no idea in what specific things I can help but one day don't hesitate to ask for something.

@Kratus, any news on this? Marking cancelled since it's been four years since an update, but if you have some updates, we'd love to see them!

One of your projects has real potential.

I don't know if it's possible to have a classic adventure mode and a dungeon, for example, where the rooms are procedurally generated, meaning the walls are randomly generated (I know you've already done this for enemies and items).

If we imagine all the rooms are rectangular, it would be possible to place an entrance and an exit door randomly, and the walls could be obstacles placed randomly as well.
The entrances and exits can also be simple staircases placed on the panel.
