Beat 'Em Up Builder

@DCurrent , thank you for the information, but i disagree with this statement:

Stop telling people things can't be done just because you haven't figured them out yet.

I do the exact opposite, i tell people that the engine is capable of things beyond what we have seen, even tho...

OpenBOR does not (and will not) directly support mouse inputs

What i tell some people "privately" is to adjust their expectations.
My experience and opinions of the engine are not absolute truths, but here is the reality for the majority of the users of the engine:

read the manual
learn as much as you can about the script syntax
Download the manual and add you personal notes to it, in case some things are not clear enough
One person can't do everything on their own, if your goal is a game with "modern" complexities and fancy stuff (on the coding side of things)
they will need help from You, the development team & the top module makers,
for complex stuff they may need to Hire You or the other top members, OR seek programmers, since there is only so much you guys can handle.
There are things Openbor WILL NOT support so you may have to get "developer level" good at coding or programming (or Hire)

this comes from my cirmcumstances, which do not allow me to spend more than 2 hours at a time on a single thing, so lots of info gets forgotten or is not "retained'

Now in relation to he topic:

i looked into the grappling editor back in 2020, and got as far as this:
Runtime Grapple Editor
"Please note: The scripts in this post are depreciated and no longer supported. My grapple functionality is now handled by the DC Elmers library."

so i put in pause since then, because the DC Elmers link was not available,
i tried openbor stats, but my machine don't run it , so ever since i a have been focusing on fixing levels, "triggers" , sound , an "blindly" editing animations of characters here and there...

if the grapple editing feature (as seen on the video ) is still available, some links would be very appreciated

Hmmm... Alright but lemme tell y'all now. I know next to nothing except where the files I need to mess with are. I saw backgrounds, characters. But I also read that some of the music shouldn't be removed because of the code or something. I may re-read the manual the next time I'm free. Other than that, yeah, I'm gonna have to prove I want to make this even though it is very much going to end up looking and playing like shit. (Because it's gonna be a lot of weekends I'll have to use to learn and mess with this.)

I had a bit of interest for this real time grappling engine as well.
But I felt "discouraged" because many things were "insurmountable" (not sure of the words)

Sure I would love such an "engine" to be accessible for without too many hard stuffs to go through to even use it. (Again, I'm not a specialist)

I would love such a thing to be possible and comlpatible with BB's grappling/slams system.
(This is NOT a request)

@WaffleMutt You should start from the beginning, read the manuals, try to tweak edit stuffs.
And when you cannot progress more, I'm sure some skilled programmers/creators here can give you a hand.
But, yes, you should start first.

I'm poking around here and there already. I'm also seeing a lot of the sprite work. I think I want to start by messing with the backgrounds. Although that'd probably make a mess out of the levels.

@WaffleMutt -

here is a .ods (open office) i created for background layers - you can customize it for your needs

all you have to do is type in the numbers on the cells under the "description" cells & after you are done, copy the horizontal row wtth the numbers & writen info & paste it to the .txt file that you are editing...

Step by step.
One step, test, one step, test...

You can remove music. The engine will complain in the log if there's a reference to tracks that don't exist, but that's it.

Also note that OpenBOR streams music live, it does not load the track into memory.

Thanks for clearing that up! Another question I should ask is about making the sprites. I recall the manual mentioned another Program. NeorageX right?

That’s a different story… you cannot pretend to win a marathon if you cannot walk.

We all have read the manual thousand of times, and I still forget commands and have to check the manual always. Many of us ask very basic questions here in the forum because we just forget basic stuff. Be sure to always have the manual at hand.

Use this approach: read the manual about stages, add a new stage, check how other stages/levels are build and look for the meaning of each command in that level file and modify according to your needs. Learn about panel background bglayer direction quake wait blockade etc etc
After you finish the stage, try a different kind of stage from another mod, like a stage where you are riding a truck, and see what makes that stage different from other stages by comparing the parameters declares in that stage .txt

From the download section check and download the Openbor Template 1.0

Alrighty... So, I'll start by messing with the levels and the menus. I think I'm actually gonna need just more direct and dumbed down explanation. Plus, I can't find the recommended program for making the sprites and such. I figure if I'm gonna show work, it could be stuff where I'd have a good idea what I'm doing.

for sprites most people use photoshop or gimp. In the tools section in Downloads you’ll fin other useful programs like fighter factory and others. Some people use Openborstats for offsets, bboxes.

Use .png files

For applying palettes to full set of files, use PalApply

Forgive my deadness. and possible inability to take time trying to retain all of this info y'all are using to pseudo self-teach me. I'm gathering concepts for the three games I'm making, and I think I can make my way around a lot of commissions. If someone else has got the time and energy to do it. I'm willing to work with them through commission... whilst I learn some of this shizzle for myself because I definitely know what I want to do but I know my dumb ape brain alone wouldn't have the time thanks to my recent series of unfortunate events.

So, I won't be tackling Beat 'Em Up Builder right now. I'm gonna focus on making Dog & Chili and eventually make my way to beat 'em up builder. Until then I will be pretty dead here. However if anyone would like some voice acting or writing feel free to hit me up and I'll be glad to help.
