Bigger background size help

I am using GIMP. I just want to do a similar thing with onion skinning like what Snow posted in the old OpenBOR manual. The Photoshop in the manual confuses me when I use GIMP for tutorial.

The attachments below show the example I have a problem. First attachment, I still have the cut image like that surrounding a character. Second attachment, I just want the cut image to have bigger size of the background.

set the canvas size to 320 x 224 in the first image and you will reach the same i think

i only use photoshop so dont know how gimp works but the comand name maybe is the same

Alright. So I go to Image, then Canvas Size. I open Canvas Size and I'm at Set Image Canvas Size. Under Canvas Size, I see Width and Height with a chain-like button for locking and unlocking, with a down arrow for name of measurements (px, cm, etc.). What I do is I change the size to 320x224 like you said. I go click the center which makes the frame move to the center of the big frame I made. Clicking the center button changes the offset of the frame. I have four options: Help, Reset, Resize, and Cancel. I clicked on Resize but I can't make the same color background as the character is surrounded with. I believe the BG color around the character except pink has no colors. I'd like to make a color BG on the frame. I'm lost. Dunno what to do.

just use that thing that copy the background color (dont know that icon name in english)
and use the pencil or that one like a bucket to paint the new area in the same color that your background had

in photoshop have the option to set the new canvas size the color, but if gimp dont come with this option just recolor the new canvas part using the same color

Just to show the problem I had in the attachment here.

By the way, I used New Layer and I went to Transparency. After that, I picked the BG color with a color picker and then I colored the same BG on the outside with pencil. Then, I used bucket on the remaining BG but using bucket first without using pencil would make the entire image to a full bg color, including a char which would be removed by full bg color. It works, but it may not be the quickest way to finish I may need a quicker method like filling the outer bg with a bucket.

Is there a quick way to color the image without messing up the character and bg image?
