In Progress Creating a TMNT mod suggestions comments ideas?

The project is currently under development.
Ironically, I was going to use both of those songs too. I might loop the chorus to turtle power for the select screen. I'm still unsure about music overall not sure which genres will fit the game best. I like both sewer stages but I prefer what you've done with the sega stage it looks dirtier which is a compliment in this case

(Bah! I've been here all day trying to post this, goddamn PC keeps crashing! )

Thanks guys, it's only rough thou.  Have to resize it better and work out how to make it so you walk in the water.

@the_rain237 - Yeah the other looks clean, but I thought it would work for the last section of sewer stages, just before you hit the streets.  Kinda like they're just below the street and some sunlight is getting in.  I'll edit it more eventually thou, make the floor look darker and wet.

I'll send you that stage when it's done, otherwise you could probably make your own in short time. (just remove the floor and change the palette)  The water comes from the original BOR (recoloured).  But I want to get better water than this.  Also I'll try and animate some water flowing from the pipes, and drips from the ceiling.

I had the turtle power loop in menu once too, but it go annoying.  TMNT out of the shadows game did that too, so I removed it from my game.  A few ideas I had turned up in that game, like the classic black and white mode,  and mikey burping in the face of enemies.  They probably just watched some cartoons and read the comics for ideas like I did.

Anyhow, I ripped the music from that game, there's a cool instrumental version of turtle power in out of the shadows.  It sounds like a MIDI composed version.  They use it on the arcade game screen.  Unfortunately it's in low quality to sound like arcade machine.

Turtle Power - Arcade music

Also here's the turtle power loops from the menu you want

Also in case anyone's interested, here's the whole OST by 'Just Blaze' (unless I missed something)

Because they're from the movie soundtrack that's still in print,
I've omitted the full length 'Turtle Power' and 'Shredder's Suite (yeah it was in the game files, but I think it's unused)

Also I have a midi version of turtle power, I'm working on some versions of it. ;)

tmnt_0058.png

this is very nice! But there should be some water effects on his feets, no?

@ the_rain - I like the second one best, the size is better too. What's the base?  I really like it, I was trying to find something for leatherhead, the existing sprites are too cartoony even with editing.

Turtles look really good, really like don's pallette.  I think mikey looks a bit bright/bold thou, the colours are good, but maybe make him more 'faded' like Don is.

---

@O Ilu - Thanks man!  yeah that's the next step,  this stage was really only a 5minute effort.

I've never got around to adding water effects before, still need to do this in Doom.  Was going to dig around some mods later to find the best method/example.

I was going to try and make him slightly submerged, and maybe animated water.  But did you mean just add effects on his feet to make it look like hes in the water?

yeah the one on the right is based on a character from Cadillac and dinosaurs the only bad thing is there are only a few frames and i think 2 attacks. I like the size of the first one just because of the extra height because leatherheads usually listed at 7 or 8 ft. tall

Mike is a bit brighter the pals used in the pic are based on the nick series where mike has a bit brighter green skin color im hoping to create pals for each version of the turtles (except the next mutation for obvious reasons) i have all of mikes done just started dons

Ahh nice, I remember you said that. Looking good!

As you can tell the 1984 look is what I'm going for, but I was also copying the front cover of issue #4 (2nd print), it's also used on the NES box art.  I always liked this cover art.

220px-Tmnt-box.jpg

My palette's aren't final thou, still got to sort out the shell colours.  I planned to make lots of random palettes and just keep the coolest ones.

BTW- you saw my last post about the music? uploaded some turtle power loops for ya.

EDIT: About leatherhead, I should of recognized the base, but you've done a good job to edit it.  If he's a boss maybe you can get away with limited frames.  Check out some Bloodbane mods, he makes great bosses and uses targeted attacks etc.  (I suck at bosses, I should learn this too)

I'll check out his work any mods specifically? I'm almost done with leatherheads sheet if you like I can upload it for you and yea thats actually the first game i had on NES i remember it well

Cool! thanks man, that'd be sweet. I'll send you some stuff too if you want them, just gotta sort out some of my edits, check which are most updated.

Rat King (he has a shade removed to try and fit with tmnt 4 style, I will make one that's just like original with new pal)

STYLE 1 - Black left on            |        STYLE 2 - NO BLACK

Foot Clan (never finished all the foot types)

I had to re-size the foot which really sucks, size issues are my main problem with this mod. :(  I never planned to make this a sprite edit project, just did some simple stuff I knew I could manage.  Mainly re-colours and a little cut and paste, kinda lazy really.

I'll check out his work any mods specifically?
Probably Crime Buster's and G.I Joe mod.  TBH I have not really played them much, one day I will sit down and play through these, I always accidentally start a new game. :P

cool!
about Rat King, what about keeping the dark shade, but apply a lighter color like some dark brown? :)

ok i wish you the best of luck on this tmnt mod perhaps you could ask white dragon to help you out with your mod after all he does have a nice water affect on tha sewer level maybe you could check into that

also with the music perhaps you could include the tmnt2 movie intro for one of the levels or even the intro also i notice with the 3rd ninja turtles movie there rideing horses and such maybe you could include a stage like that where there dressed up as jap warriors and holding the transport gadget as  a weapon which would gather all kinds of diffrent powers but it depends on what type of tmnt game you want to base it on

persoanlly i would base it on the 1987 cartoon series where they versed many diffrent enemies i know you wouldent be able to have every single one of them but you could add a few on each world or level also i think you should have  a weapon system where you can pick up various weapons rather then using the main ones all the time so say if tthe foot soldiers or enemies drop stuff you would have the option to use there weapons as well  once you pick it up

@therain237 and @beastie: I can help with making original stages and pixel art. Do you have skype or facebook? If so pm me your contact info :)

@ryomaneo

Thanks for the support!
Just to clarify, we're both working on two different mods, but sharing ideas/resources etc.

The mod therain237 is making seems like it will be canon and more pleasing to fans.

But I'm taking creative license and sort of creating a new TMNT universe, based on who and what I want in the game.  I'm basically blending the original comic series, archie series, 1987 and 2003 cartoon series. (and some tiny aspects from the movies) The story will be centered around the early parts of each series.

I don't think I will have a detailed story, just cut scenes etc. with minimal dialogue.  The game will not be linear, you will choose where to go next, just like the Manhattan missions game.

tmnt3_2.png
tmnt_0008.png
- My test map

The missions from that game will be added (but altered) and additional missions and story added.  Like encounters with people like Rat King, Leatherhead etc.  The setup is pretty basic in that game "hey those guys are doing something bad, we better stop them' type missions.
tmnt.png
Each mission has 3 parts to clear, each part is harder than the next.  When you clear part one you get sent back to the map and part two will take it's place.  You can start part 2 if you wish, or do another mission first.  This is what was cool about the original Manhattan Missions game. Anyhow long story short it will be more about gameplay and less about story.  It will be something you can play differently each run, rather than a linear set of stages.  This also makes it much easier for me to make a game without having to rationalize stage progression.

I don't want to be misleading to anyone, I'm not trying to make a game for fans, more for my own tastes. So there is less confusion, I'll explain what my story and characters will be.  (and because you seem interested)

My plan was to start you off with random punks/gangs, slowly introduce the foot clan and purple dragons.

(various enemies from SOR, Final Fight, Crime Fighters etc.)

The foot and purple dragons will have an alliance, Hun, Tatsu and Karai will be included.  Foot clan will be real people not robots, Shredder will be human, like the comics and movies.

Bebop and Rocksteady will be included, they will start as (human) purple dragon members and eventually be mutated.

(concept sprites only, I have other bases in mind too)

To fight the 'Turtle Menace' Shredder insists that Hun select members of the purple dragons to be trained in martial arts.  Thou he denies any of them to be considered foot clan.  So you will slowly start to encounter punks and thugs packing ninja weapons rather than knives, chains and baseball bats.

Baxter Stockman is also planned as a character, he will probably be the archie/'87 cartoon style Baxter - not because I prefer the white baxter over the black one.  It's just because I have sprites that suit this style without much editing

(well I guess I could change skin colour, but might look wierd)

I will introduce Tricereton's and the Kraang and the whole TGRI/TCRI thing.

(Krang or the Kraang - concept only)

I'm also going to somehow include the 1987 Krang and ally him with Shredder.  Then introduce robot foot soldiers, Dimension X.  Also I want to add the 'Mighty Mutanimals' as playable chars,  at one point it was just going to be a Mutanimals mod.

I'd really like to add Slash as playable too somehow.
slash.png

The gameplay is not based on any games, it's just openbor type gameplay ;)  It's shaping up thou and I think it's fun to play already.  It's nothing like bWWd's demo, it's a slower pace, resembling Manhatton Missions.  Similar to that game, holding different directions control your attacks, but each have their own combos.  I'm trying to add many cancels etc. so you can mix attacks and combos together, which is why I've been working on Raphael for so long.

(Sorry for the epic long post, but thought I should explain the whole thing)

------

@ Anurizm - I use neither sorry, PM on this forum is best way to find me.  That'd be awesome if you can help with stages and sprites thou.  If it fits the current style I've got at the moment,  I'd be happy to use anything you wish to make. :) Also some chars/enemies won't need editing, just need a nice new palette that fits the game.

I had to add enemies to the game just to see if they're sprites even work together, some had to be re-sized so now they look crap and I don't want to use them.  There's quite a few I'll have to discard, so I'm short on enemies again.  I really want to add as many common punks/thugs etc. as possible, so it's not a bunch of remaps and aliases.

Any suggestions are welcome!

Cheers!

It's interesting to see the sprites you have for human rocksteady & stockman i thought about using the same ones... I really like what you did with krang/utroms looks good I really like your rat king sprites a lot too. This is what i have for leatherhead but as i mentioned not a ton of frames on the spritesheet

It's really cool man, I like it!  Should be enough frames for a boss, or were you were thinking 2003 leatherhead as playable?
One thing thou, the white background is making it hard to cut the sprites.

I think I'll change him to be more like the original sewer dwelling Leatherhead.

here's ratking sheet,
RATKING_NEW_OUTLINE.png

Edit:
Here's my half assed mondo gecko edit I didn't finish yet.  I got lazy with the hair, got the photoshop version with layers if you want it thou.
mondo_gecko_edit3_WIP3_shoes.png

I don't mind the coat, I kind of like the idea of sprites that won't look exactly like the original source.
I still want to add skateboard somehow.

sorry bout the lack of transparency this should be much easier to edit i picked white because it could be viewed as a tattered lab coat but the dirty look u gave him looks good too it makes more sense because he will likely be encountered in the sewer i considered making him playable character since he is usually an ally but couldn't find a suitable base im considering usagi yojimbo and casey jones as bonus characters or atleast npcs but im not even close on sprites
