Just wanted to update everyone on the status of the game:
It's coming along great, Bloodbane is truly doing some remarkable work.
-All the main quests are finished, 90% of the subquests are finished.
- All the spells, except for Bard are finished
- About 70% of the items are finished
- All the enemies/monsters/bosses are done
- Just about all of the scenes are done.
Still to do:
- Add remaining subquests (including Jousting tournament)
- Add Cavalier and Bard as unlockable characters
- Finish adding magic/quest items
- Other misc stuff and fixing bugs etc.
The goal here was to do a game like Elder Scrolls (but 2-D) - with a giant overall story mode along with optional sidequests. Since this is D&D the story is set in the original Greyhawk setting, and focuses on the conflict between the good kingdom of Furyondy and the evil empire of Iuz. Specifically from the 2nd edition From the Ashes setting.
We took most of the characters from the D&D action figure line by LJN, which also appeared in the Saturday morning cartoon, and incorporated them into the storyline as either playable characters, NPCs, or bosses.
Lastly, because this is D&D, we tried to follow the 'rules' of each character class -- so mages can't use weapons like swords, clerics cant use sharp weapons, thieves can hide in shadows and backstab and steal, dwarves have natural resistance to certain attacks, etc.
Also, many iconic D&D magic items, like the Mace of St. Cuthbert, the Vorpal Blade etc are in the game (and can only be used by the appropriate class).
The nice thing is, if you've never played D&D or have no clue about the toys, you can pick up and play this game and you'll get the quintessential experience. If you are an old-school D&D fan, then there is tons of nostalgia to enjoy
And Bloodbane has done some incredible scripting --
- An inventory system where you can buy and sell items in shops and carry them around and use them
- A magic system where you can buy and learn new spells, with a growing inventory
- A lighting system for dungeons, where you can buy torches or lanterns to light up dark areas
- An armor upgrade system
- LOTS of other cool surprises.
Pierwolf's Endless Quest game and his additional help with sprites and resources has been invaluable and can't thank him enough
Anyway, that's the update - we've been working on this for over 2 years now, but hope to release it soon! It's slow when it's just 2 people, and everytime I test for bugs I play through the whole game from the start and it takes a few days just to complete it!
With the current build of the game its possible to play through the story mode from start to finish, if you didnt know what was still left to add you'd think the game was ready for release. So we are close, please be patient and I hope you'll think it was worth the wait
