Translation: Beats Of Rage doesn't have its own Youtube Channel. Okay So from that Said.... I need permission to make a Beats Of Rage YouTube Page.

The idea is good, but I don't see it happen. We would need videos for that, people to make those videos.
And I know that every person from the core team is pretty busy right now.

Which is why I need Permission to make it my self.

As for videos... I have a interesting concept for that!

There are going to be 3  playlist on there
"Beginner Tutorials"
-Every last beginner tutourial I can find of Open Bor.
"Advance Tutorials"
- As many tutorials how to do different types of things

"Promos"
To promo updates of  Open Bor  and  Trailers of Upcoming OpenBor games

I'm Willing to do all of this If I get the permission.

It could be good to have someone to edit videos and such, to keep the channel running, etc.
But (I don't want to sound arrogant and evil) it needs to be someone who really knows and understand about OpenBOR to make it. Or it will spread false info at the end.

Which is why I need Permission to make it my self.

Well then go ahead :D

I'm thinking of making some tutorial videos myself but I need to know which aspect has tutorial and which hasn't yet

I only want to make the Youtube Channel not the videos... When it comes to videos I'll leave that up to the professionals I'll just sort them  where they need to be.

Thank you!  and as for Tutorials I have a great idea for a Beginner tutorial!  Now I do understand there are many different ways of making a Mod, But you could make the standard for beginners. Also, I mean Like bare bones... like original Beats of rage model Beginner like.

Great idea. I think a quick guide, a step-by-step of how to make a character, from someone who knows what is talking about is very welcome. I agree with DC when he says that when some people can have good intention but lacks knowledge, this could spread  inaccurate information about the engine and people will start to blame the engine by their own faults. And this happens over and over...

Btw, DC has already set an Wiki for OpenBor and started to include things there. We will have even colored synthax :)

You know I've always wanted to go back to remaking more videos but I feel unmotivated. I know a lot of people are confused on where to start and how to do it, and people tell me about that. I know my videos are kinda confusing for very beginners and I always wanna change them so bad. I have had plans on separating playlists similar to Jetstrange's idea.

I'm always aware of that and I agree too. This is one of the reasons I wanna remake them to avoid misinformation but I know knowledge is the key to help. Like Bloodbane, I need to find out where I can start and what I could point out in order, to show users what to do. I always wanna go with step-by-step. I can give out where to start, like, starting with downloading Neo Edit Pack, along PalApply and video.txt. Even with photoshop programs if any of those don't have theirs.

I always thought the best way would be an updated edit pack, with fully commented text files, similar to what Roel originally made.  It's straightforward and can be easily amended by anyone over time.  There also could be some of the most commonly used scripts included, with examples given.  Also templates for different types of entities (chars, items etc) could be included.  This way you just learn all the basics as you go, additional commands could be commented out with examples of usage.

This way just making your first character should expose you to a lot of what openbor can do and exactly how it works.

Code:
# Do not forget to name your character.
# Health is optional.

name	Mandy
health	100
speed	9
type	player
shadow	3
diesound data/sounds/eek.wav

icon	data/chars/mary/icon.gif

# To create an alternate colour version, enter the path to
# an image in the original, and one in the alternative colourset.
remap	data/chars/mary/stand1.gif data/chars/mary/alt1

# Animation syntax:
# First enter the name of the animation:
#	anim	[name] idle, walk, jump, etc
#
# Then add some other values, like so:
# loop	[0/1]
#	offset	x y location of center,bottom
#	delay	num in 100th seconds
#	bbox	x y width height weak point
#	attack	x y width height force drop long	attack rect, force, drop opponent, hurt longer
#
# Every time you specify "frame", a frame is appended to the animation,
# using the settings you just specified. You can change all the values
# at any time between adding frames, though changing "loop" again is
# ofcourse essentially pointless.
# All numeric values default to 0 if not specified.
#
#	frame	[path]
#
# The maximum number of frames per animation is 32.
# You may use GIF, PCX or BMP files.

I am aware of that. Some people do prefer to rant them help. Its natural of human being.

O Illusionista is one of the few to have cared about this and despite all his efforts and after a few years being here, this is still a major issue.
Thanks. I am just trying to get more info. Because an engine with no information is a dead engine. If we want to continue to exist, we should start to document things.

this only works if the real gurus step up and share the knowledge, instead of just talking down to people and waving their dicks around....
Beastie, with all respect I have for you, I would like to require you to NOT say this again. Many people may not know the origin of this, but some people (which includes myself) do know what you are talking about. You have NO IDEA of how much damage you could did with your bitter words. But I am aware of it and its not good.

Please, do not bring personal differences to the forum again. If you want, go and talk with the person you have differences. Again, I really like you and I don't want to take any unpolite action.

Thanks.

Sorry bro, maybe it's lost in translation, I dunno, but I think you're reading into my comments too much... ???

Honestly I wasn't being personal or thinking of anyone in particular.  (I wasn't around for any of the recent drama either, I only heard through the grapevine.  So I really don't know any details about any of that at all.)  I'm just talking in general.  There is people using openbor that aren't even on these forums for example, from the mods I've seen, plenty of people know what they're doing with openbor.

Anyhow, people have tried making tutorials, guides and the like in the past...  they end up being discouraged when no one supports the effort.  Or feel embarrassed  and shy away...  People just nitpicking and not really contributing to make any improvements.  You can excuse people as just being too busy only for so long...a whole forum of people, months go by...a few replies, none of which are core members, I'm sure is pretty discouraging...

Also no one is really an expert, which is half the problem.  But collectively we can be...but it takes everyone to comment, share and correct as we go.    I've seen efforts have been made in the past and barely anyone even takes notice let alone contribute to the conversation.  You can excuse people as just being too busy only for so long...a whole forum of people, weeks/months/years go by...a few replies, none of which are core members, I'm sure is pretty discouraging...

Not even sure who you would even consider an expert, they're either not here anymore, or someone like DC, Bloodbane who already have a thousand things to do anyway...  DC is a dev, we want his time spent on that, he shouldn't need to deal with this.  Bloodbane has been THE GUY for years on the forum, we need everyone else/all of us to step up and be THAT GUY...as much as possible...  Not just 4 or 5 people...  Most of the people in this thread have already either been the ones seeking help or those trying to help others for some time...

One other problem with having videos is a lot of questions will be asked on the youtube channel rather than here, this is the same scenario with us having a chat room previously on the site, questions and answers get lost instead of being in the forums.  Any official youtube for openbor should probably disable the comments and direct people to an official thread for it on the forums.  Or someone is going to have a really hard time trying to moderate it and answer all the rabble.

On subject of videos,  videos won't allow people to bypass ever reading documentation.  Video should compliment documentation, bridge the gap between the two mediums.  Also a lot of people asking in the past didn't necessarily want tutorials specifically on OpenBOR, it was things like working with graphics/sprites, palettes, music etc.  That made them confused.... A lot of these things need to be understood before they even start with openbor itself.  Any tutorial should assume the user has never done anything like this before.

Just roughly...

It's funny you should mention that - the videos I'm working on, are specifically about sprites, color tables, and other non-openbor specific concepts that you just have to know if you're going to make a game. This very evening I'm recording the first - it will do nothing more than explain how color tables work and how they apply to sprite work.

These are the sorts of things that video is good for. The minute you get into engine specifics, it's time to head over to wikis and other mediums. That information can get outdated quickly, and if its a video, there's no way to edit or update it.

Don't forget BTW, the new Wiki is operational. I've been putting pages into it, though admittedly it's not the most useful of information just yet. Thus far either advanced script concepts or Generic overview kind of stuff. It's the product of documenting new features as I go. But you have to start somewhere...

I really like this initiative to see some new help for new coders.
Even if I personally can't code anymore. It's really a great way to give more help to begginers and other people.

While there are some things I could see being outdated pretty quickly, there are a lot of basic tutorials that can be done for things that aren't likely going anywhere like the standard animations and character header for example.

I think you guys can handle it by:
  • Blocking comments
  • Blocking personal messages (I found about hiding the message option)
  • Putting a link to the wiki topic on the description
  • Putting a disclaimer "READ THE DESCRIPTION" on the videos themselves
I think you'll need a new channel for that.

Yep, that's it.

It won't prevent people from sending messages, but they'll need to "hack" the URL for that. It's easier to just follow the link to the forum/wiki.
