Guys, Is it possible to make a custom 2D sprites of Samurai Showdown 64-2 or Warriors Rage Character?

Good morning guys, I was going to make this post yesterday but i didn't have time to do so. I decided to make this thread because i was curious to see if it was possible if i can make of if someone can aid me custom 2D sprites for one of the characters from SNK's Samurai Shodown 64-2 or the Warrior's Rage game on the PSX (Playstation). Now i have no experience at spriting or making customized sprites, but recently it piqued my interest because i always wanted to see one of the SamSho 64-2 characters on Mugen. Someone has already done it with the boss character Yuga, but the characters i want to see in 2D are either Taizan Morozumii, Shadow Asura, Half-Shaded Shiki, or especially Shiki's daughter Mikoto. I was thinking about trying to make Mikoto or Half-Shaded Shiki as a 2D character by using Rosemary's sprites from Asura Blade as a base since Zenksren have recently ripped the sprite sheets of all the characters for both games on Spriters Resource. Does anyone have any thoughts about this?

@bWWd is the man to talk to. He has several projects released using sprites created from 3D models.

The problem isn't going from model to sprite. It's getting the model to begin with. Relatively few people even know SamSho 64 and 64-2 exist, and even fewer care. AFAIK they still aren't emulated correctly.

There's no realistic chance the model assets are available anywhere, and if they were it's probably some esoteric format contemporary modeling software won't support.

That leaves screen grabs. See above about bad emulation. I can't even imagine trying to get clean grabs, let alone ones with consistent camera angles.

IMO, you'd probably be better off creating the models yourself. It's a steep learning curve, but that's the best way I know of.

Again though, @bWWd knows a lot more about it than I do. I would wait for him to chime in first.

I think he means drawing n64 characters in 2d sprite form so they fit with pixel art graphics, but if not , then ...
It is doable I ripped this way bomberman 64 , it came out ok.Yes i ripped frame by frame animations , idle, walking, jumping etc, all frames so its 60fps.
You rip them on background that has colours very different from character colours, so its easy to just magic wand by colour hue and remove them.
About the camera angles, its not as important as you might think, you can get away with a lot. , just make sure the scale is right.
IMO it would clash with pixel style backgrounds, so i had to rip n64 backgrounds too( look wrong like a game thats never finished /polished) theres plugin to rip 3d models off n64 games and backgrounds , you can open these in blender and render from whatever angle you want
It is doable kinda like sf IV was on android, it was 3d chars ripped to 2d frames, im not a fan of it cause its mostly not done in 60fps , so you can just go frame by frame and rip the animations using frame grabbing or video player, in potplayer you can record a window as video or image sequence.

Thanks for the advice you're giving me Bwwd, but here's what I was actually referring to in my earlier post:

Here's the characters I was talking about reverting to 2D Samsho style sprites:

And here's the gameplay of Warriors Rage showing the graphical difference of Hyper Neo Geo 64. Forgive me if this is too much of a example I'm giving Bwwd

Love that the 64 series, but even though I'm a Galford fan, I have to admit they made his bust form stupidly overpowered. He's pretty much invincible if you're a remotely competent player. Oh, and that's before before you kick in the electric power up mode to double his damage... which in the second game he can do any time he feels like without spending meter.

I always choose Taizan Morozumii because he fights with a spear which can switch out as a calligraphy brush to write giant Kanji symbols that can manifest into powerful attacks, like for example if he writes the Kanji symbol for fire, it will create a fiery explosion.

If Galford had nothing but the charge kick and Strike Heads (command grab) he'd be a menace. The flying kick is unblockable and nearly impossible to dodge because it has such a huge hitbox. The only thing you can really do is run up and hit him, but most characters are too slow to do that if they're more than a few steps away. So that means you have to stay up in his face. Problem is, that's exactly what he wants because of the command grab.

Tough to beat, but would be somewhat reasonable at least.... except that's only the beginning.

  • He's one of the fastest characters in the game and does good base damage.
  • Has a load of teleport options.
  • One of the fastest and most damaging projectiles in the game.
  • Instant "get off me" force-field with no recovery time, that also juggles.
  • His super comes out in a blink, tracks anywhere on the screen, does tons of chip damage, leaves him safe on block, and you can't jump out of it.
  • Several TOD juggle combos.

On top of all that, he's a small target to hit in general and as mentioned before, he can power up all his moves to do double damage any time he wants, as much as he wants. I almost hate playing him because it feels unfair, but considering how badly they nerfed him for SSV Special and in the first patch for SS 2019, he deserves a game or two.

Even i kinda have a hard time dealing with him in the old games of Samurai Shodown especially the third game. However I also agree that Galford deserves to have his own spin-off game for the series, but given SNK is currently focusing on KOF XV and remaking their old projects, it seems likely to happen.

Well by game or two I meant a game where's he's not nerfed to death, but now that you mention it, a spin off would be cool. Cool enough in fact I planed one called "Sailor's Quest", but at the moment too many irons in the fire to work on it.

I see what you mean DC, This Sailor's Quest project you mention just now sounds interesting, i hope that there's more details about it in the future.

Shiki has an official sprite set in NGBC, and I think Asura does as well. Rinko was made for Mugen using the 3D model by a Japanese author, while Yuga has also been done by a Japanese author with unfinished sprites, but was later completed by somebody else.

No luck for any Sen characters. I was thinking about doing Rinko myself...

Thanks for the advice Miru, it's sad that there's no Samurai Shodown Sen characters for Mugen. Though I doubt anyone would show any interest in working on them anyway.
