Canceled Ninja Gaiden: City Fighters

I've decided to make this after the rumors for a Ninja Gaiden game for Neo Geo were true.

The main idea was to make a generic vigilante brawler named "Hero: City Fighters" with Li Hua from Kaiser Knuckle as the main character. Then, people started saying things about some "unreleased Ninja Gaiden game on Neo Geo", with a different "Ryu" and other playable characters. Add that to the fact I started having other stuff in mind, and voila.

Gameplay wise, I intend to make it like Pier's unreleased Arena/DFO mod.
But instead of a generic "strong attack", the gameplay will have a "launcher" so you can be more liberal with comboing your enemies.

There will be some unlockable chars and a secret one which you can select once you beat the game.

You start the game with three characters:
Ryu:

A balanced fighter who uses Katon no jutsu (Flame Magic). An enigmatic and drifting spy, it's unclear if he's the legendary Ryu Hayabusa or not.

Kenshiro:

A burly monk who is blessed by the power of the Earth element. He relies on his bulk and strength to smite evil.

Shimo:

An adorable and agile kunoichi who can use the power of Ice. Her school was attacked by a strange villain, and she's fighting to find the culprit.

And yes, I plan to use custom lifebars. I'm going to change the fonts, of course!  ;D

Kurisu, I'm glad to see you finally started this project.
I have to admit I lurked and watched your sig progress about it for few months now and this is definitly the kind of game I would like to see! Something not about a regular beat em up licence or based on a trend.

I watched this picture about Neogeo cancelled game (one more) and I'm glad it inspires you to create your own game !

2 suggestions.

-I would personally edit the palette of all the characters so they don't look like what they are based on. I would rename Shimo and give her another color set. And I think she have a color separation on legs. A good way to giver her a kind of different design. (Different hair color, thighs highs or something...)

-I would rescale some of the heroes to match each others.
Martial masters monk is very WIDE, X should be scaled down to something like 80% (I don't know)
Shimo should be scalled down x and y since she's from a game with slightly bigger characters sprites. (just look a t the size of her head)

Instead, you can scale up Ryu with rotsprite or similar to match Shimo and Monk size.

Anyway! I like this project!! Please go on. 8)

I am guessing you chose the joe musashi outfit for Ryu as he uses fire magic.

Actually this is one of my possible projects :
"DEMON FIGHTER" or something like that.

Don't freak out, this is just a concept...

In fact I have something like 4 or 5 possible concepts of games.
But to really make them, I would need to clone Bloodbane and other great coders/scripters :D
So it will certainly remain a dream.

But I might start it beside of my W.A. Project, since, it's certainly less complex to code.
But later...

Epic artwork. I really love your mock-ups and the sprite art you use - that girl with the katana is really lovely! Would it require that much coding skills? Then the idea of Demon Fighter would be really ambitious.

I'm giving a try on Nienhalt Sieger. That man is a beast! I got a mugen version with Samurai Shodown 6 graphics. Hoo, boy, thanks for the suggestion  ;D

Basically, the girl is 90% based on Shimo.
With color separation and smaller head/different haircut.

This will require far less advanced coding skill than what I'm needing for W.A. Project.

So it might be my alternate 2nd project...


For your game, IMO you should keep the characters you have selected and scale a bit and color swap as well.
I can assist you during the concept/design process.

Metamoqester, eh? If the screen didn't keep shaking so much, it would be one of the best ninja games ever.
 
You might call me crazy, but I also had a metamosqueter-like game project in the past.
More a Warzard game actually.
Basucally it was a game with edited characters based on Maki from CVS2 Haohmaru from CVS2 and Ingrid from CFJ.
All of them VS a lot of monsters in a single fight level. A la Warzard.

I posted mockup in the Lavalit website era. :)

Speaking of development, I came across troubles with Shimo that were too much complicated to fix, mostly the balance on her attacks - and the fact that both her and the Hanzo character (Which I'm using for Ryu*) use a sword, this would be rather redundant design wise.

Her issues are because she has a huge reach, which means she can play safe and have no worries. But I remembered I have some Akiha Sailor Suit version around my files and noticed how easier it is to deal without sacrificing balance and the Noise Factory/DFO gameplay I'm trying to get in.

So far, the implementation of Akiha from Melty Blood worked wonders. It's easier to balance out issues, Melty blood's gameplay offers a lot of variety on her attacks and overall, she felt more fitting to a speedster kitty character. Shimo, in the other hand, gave me the same problems of when I put Lihua from Kaiser Knuckle in my FHR pak Trying to keep the character accurate to the source material, as is what Pier did with the playable cast: shake weapon, everything that comes into contact dies shortly after.

If you are a fan of Sakura Wars you'll notice something familiar on her palette  ;)

Ah, by the way, I still have some Neinhalt Sieger sprites ripped. If I get more ideas for his moveset, he's gonna replace the big Shaolin guy for the "Tank" dude.

* Some people have seemed to miss the memo on this, but as I've posted on the OP, "Some people wonder if he's the legendary Ryu Hayabusa or not". This means I'm leaving Ryu's identity ambiguous on purpose, just for the sake of fun.
