So at some point you will need image software like photoshop, gimp etc.. Download the GUI 'OpenBOR Stats' - LINK Open some mods with it and see how things work. The manual should have everything you'll need for now. The original BOR edit pack is also good to get started http://www.chronocrash.com/forum/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=item61 Make sure to update to the latest OpenBOR build.
