Hi,
I tried lately to add a Barbarian game to Openbor. Tenshu has kindly accepted to use his game as a base.

You can play a beta tournament mode that leads to an ending scene that I need to finish :).

I really enjoyed this!
Barbarian is a home computer classic, and one of the very early on 1 on 1 versus fighters, but, the version i had played is the ms-dos one, and i just really couldn't enjoy the controls and gameplay.
This demo however is great and promising, i like the fast speed of it, and how easy it is to "pick up and play",, and the ease in which the fatal moves can be performed.

The next part of the game is the Dungeon of Drax remade. The controls were really awful (in the original game, you needed to press up to change the direction and the player is facing the other side).

I'm a big big fan of this game and play it a lot when i was children on AMIGA 500 :)
I dream of good VS fighting games on OpenBOR and you release one of my favorite :p
Barbarain + graphics are excellent, musics are excellent ... i've play it to the end, but like it's not finished there is no final boss :p
My only real problem with your game is that it is so fast :(
We move so fast, really ... this game is a slow game, where you have to block an attack, prepare a head chop ... roll to change side etc ...
Here the faster to hit win the fight. I know it's a beta and all is perfect in your VS mode script, i love it, only for this game make it really slower :)

I like that custom lifebar
When ive seen the fight then i noticed right away that characters are way too low, that resolution doesnt fit this game, it needs to be wider, maybe cut the snakes heads and place them lower, this way you can still have those and rise fighting area a bit, i know youre limited by the graphics  but maybe also try to place players icons and health below the action not on top of it .This way fight will take place in the middle of the screen.
Its a bit too easy at the moment and too fast, i remember original was slower and you had to wait for awhile before attack will finish to perform next one.
I would disable slow motion when performing fatality and make it play normal also id love to see that goblin kickin the head and laughin, that was icing on the cake in original game, it was memorable because of it.

bWWd: Good suggestion for the lifebars ;).  I'll integer goblins to the death animation and remove the slow motion if it's not desired at the next update.

Did you know? The original voices and sfx were ripped from Kalidor movie (Conan 3):

I see that atari st version has more samples , maybe they would be useful.
When i look at original death sword , i can see how complicated that game was at that time, its strange cause nowadays we have it so easy, and yet even my games dont have those small details like laughing goblin and different reactions to different attacks.They really put some thought and work into it even if it was 8 bit project.
I wouldnt be surprised if the idea of the game was that gobling kicking head and the rest was just background to set it up.I wish i had more of that in my own games, that fun factor that people would remember.

Yeah...the controls were definitely a welcome upgrade in this version, as i don't remember the original controls too fondly (I understand that at the time there wasn't anything like that, the first street fighter had came out just a year before, and we all know how badly that controls also :'p but as an openbor project, this can be ammended)
And personally, i like the fast speed :D perhaps i'd agree to make it a *BIT* slower, but not too much...just my opinion tho, since i enjoy that. This is the very early beta in its first stage of development after all, i am sure everything will fall in place eventually as the gameplay is worked on further.

Edit: oh, dungeon of drax is Barbarian II right?i'm not familiar with it, but looking at some gameplay footage, that should be fun!Seems more of a side-scroller. Reminds me of what MersoX did with "Super Thundercats" and the levels from the first TMNT game in "TMNT Rescue-Palooza", taking a cool concept, while adressing control issues that sometimes keep me from enjoying the originals.

The Death Sword and Buckler Compass is an important artifact that shows you the direction of the exit if you are lost.
I added a Timer because in Dungeon of Drax mod, you've got 999 seconds before Drax launches an evil spell to the people of Jeweled City :).
I can make this goblin appear and take the corpse, I just don't know how this entity can detect the bodypart on the floor and shoot on it.
 
looks better, now heads are in center of the screen I would place timer above the stage to fill that black space and then maybe bring portraits and lifebars of p1 and p2 a bit closer to each other so sword of player 2 isnt reaching too far but kinda ends where stage graphics ends..
 
yolomate: Thank you for your support. I will try my best to release a complete version in the following months.

I've made some small progress on the tournament mode:
- Lifebars and time below the stage following bWWd advice
- Speed 18 -> 15, Running 36 -> 25 according to Darknior suggestion
- Added a finisher movelist above the screen
A first attempt with a new tournament companion:
 
Great! Now it would be nice if you put some focus on that goblin when he stops and laughs music will stop and we hear his laugh.So its not that fast and have bigger impact.
Add sound in decapitated death animation, so when head pops off you hear some thump or something, so it doesnt sound like regular attack but something bigger.
 
Wow :o! i grow up with the C64 and the Amiga! I love to see the barbarian games runni'n on openbor!!!
Can't wait to play this remake later 8) and thank you for your post! i will take a looki later into your game and figure out the finisher animation for my game;) ... Bless bless and good speed :)
 
bWWd: I will try my best on this death anim. If you want to make some trials and errors, I can send you the current updated version of the game.

So here's what I plan to release after SOR Nightmare is finished:
Keymaster, Broda, Zagul, Qrinos (he's the lizardman Drax's champion) and Drax will join the Evil Forces Tournament:
