Basic Tutorial Recommendation?

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to the forum, and new to OpenBOR, which is to say this is my first day working with either. I love the possibility of what OpenBOR can do, and I'm excited to try it out.

I've looked for basic step-by-step tutorials on YouTube, and I can't find any that seem to be helpful. I'm wondering if anyone here can recommend a source (possibly a specific thread on the forum) that would address questions along the lines of "getting started" with OpenBOR. I really want to learn how to use it.

Like I said, I'm new. So, if that's a dumb request, I apologize. Hopefully I don't get flamed too badly.

Thanks for your help! Looking forward to responses...

Welcome to the party, Matt! OpenBOR is indeed an exciting and powerful engine, and you'll soon find is surprisingly easy to work with!

Most of us oldbies started with the Edit Pack, and then dove right in with the manual for engine commands and such. Later on, once you get the basics down, you'll want either Obeditor or OpenBorStats to help you fine tune your characters, enemies, and stages.

The best way to learn is to see someone else's work, and either modify or build off it. And that's okay! No one here will judge you for it: because that's how we started! The original Beats of Rage (BOR) was a fan game made by SenileTeam over a decade ago, and the OpenBOR engine was created from a desire to modify that game. Reusing sprites, sharing code, or even just straight copy/pasting a script technique is more than encouraged. We're all in this together--and so long as we help each other out, we'll always have great free games to play!

Good luck, and welcome aboard.  :)

That's awesome! Whew - I'll admit, I was expecting a lot of "noob" hate, based on my experiences on other forums, haha. But, I appreciate the welcome.

The game I'm looking to design is your basic Final Fight clone, but starring my friends and I as the heroes. Every year, we take a trip together and, before each trip, I always come up with something crazy to commemorate it (artwork, a song, etc.). This year, I can't think of anything better than a beat em up game featuring throwbacks to our adventures.

I'll definitely check into the Edit Pack and the manual and everything you mentioned. That all sounds helpful.

You also mentioned seeing other people's work and modifying or building off of it. That sounds hugely helpful, and very conducive to the way I learn. How would I go about finding a library of ready made games I can investigate? Are they available on here, or do I need to find them in other places?

Again, thanks so much for the welcome. Now I won't feel so bad returning to the forum with questions - I'm sure I'll have plenty. :-)

Take care.

Welcome to the forum friend. We're more strict than a lot of places on behavior - but that's precisely to squelch stuff like "noob hate". OpenBOR is a can of worms to be sure, and the documentation to put it bluntly is all over the place.

Plus the people who know the engine the best (yours truly and the other devs), have been not a lot of help lately because we're all buried to our eyebrows in real life.

That's the bad news.

The good news is while the learning process to OpenBOR is sometimes confusing, it's an exponential curve. The more you do, the faster you'll pick up on the next thing, and OpenBOR is easily the most versatile, powerful engine of its kind, period. If you can imagine it, you can make it. You'll also find our community at large is always willing to step forward, welcome new blood, and offer direct assistance.

Good luck!
