Battletoads @ E3

A new Battletoads was revealed at e3 after being announced a while back. Doesn't seem that interesting to me, but it at least has some new enemies.

Love it

I like animations a lot, better than rash from latest KInstinct.
I undesrtand people disappointment cause its kiddie game now, i dont mind that.

Yeah i see a lot of thumbsdowns because target audience is mostly grownups but theyre aiming at kids so they feel offended , i get it but thre was battletoads cartoon in the old days aimed at kids, the game was kinda brutal especially arcade version and its toned down.
I was worried about this game but i dig this version, toads dont look heavily modified like different incarnations of TMNT they serve every 3 years.
I hope negative reactions wont kill the franchise.
IT is strange because i dont like new incarnations of TMNT but here i dont mind, maybe im more nostalgic about TMNT or that difference between toads look in old days and here isnt as big.
Im wondering what would people say if game had the same style but was brutal like old games.

I call this version “Pocket Battletoads” because that’s what it reminds me of; Pocket Fighter and its GB antecedents. It’s kinda cute and I’m sure it will control just fine, but it’s not that great a note to return on.

This looks amazing! This graphic style really suits the battle toads and works in way I don't think it could for something like tmnt

Dark Queen looks underwhelming

This is what i dont like and they way she looked like and the pigs she had made the game quite unique but now its lost.
I think they gave it to small studio because they didnt believe they make $, they want to reintroduce franchise to kids but thats now how  first game was introduced , nes version was already brutal and that made it special, its a risky move to change this.

This is the same reason I don't like any other TMNT excluding the original cartoon. I don't like those new cartoons - they are too much cartoony to me, neither I like the movies (I hate that gangsta turtle from the movie).

I don't get why they need to revamp the character looks and they got worse than before - look at those eyes.  The Dark Queen is another example of bad design revamp, but on this case I think I can get it - its to make her less sexualized.

Here is a review from someone who tried the game.

Well, huge fists and feet are there so its ok for me , also they didnt made them rappers like TMNT, so thats fine , also didnt gave them 5 toes like they gave turtles 3 toes in cartoon.
It is aimed at kids 100% but first game actually attracted kids because of brutal action and things that other games did not had , battletoads wasnt so generic like this so im just hoping this wont kill the franchise for good, maybe they didnt wanted to risk byt making R rated battletoads, or just gave indie devs a chance.
I would prefere if they just kept designs like they were originally.

I would recommend the 2003 Ninja Turtles show, which was less cartoony and a lot darker than the original. Really, the only one that's really cartoony is the latest one, as even the 2012 one was about as cartoony as the original show.

Yeah first season of 2003 series was ok, but thanks to nickelodeon having TMNT now we can get best TMNT figures ever released , they do very good job by letting companies license  new figures without blocking like playmates did aggresively for more than a decade .Thanks to their managment we can get this :

While I would still play this since they made it a beat'em up and not like the original games, though I still would've played it anyway, I dislike everything they did with this, namely the artstyle. You don't need to make a game childish to get kids to play them, in fact in serves as a deterrent for most kids these days, especially when they're usually playing M rated titles, even most of Mortal Kombat's audience was kids and look what happened when Nintendo tried to censor and Sega came with that blood code. It's not necessary. The animation is nice and fluid though, if they had did that but kept the original designs or came with a new one that still made the Toads and bosses badass, I'd have no problems.

Since I'm here I'll put up this video to, the guy has some harsh words for this game but he makes good points. He's the creator of a old 90's comic book called Cyberfrog, which became famous overnight after current comic books took a dive. The main point of his rant is that despite his concept being about a robotfrog and salamander fighting alien bees, he still takes it seriously, and the fact that EVERYTHING these days is made to be cute, so it seems like Rare is following a trend most people don't want and want some people like to think kids want.

What's weird for me is that I'm a Battletoads fan now thanks to you reintroducing them to me through your mod. I totally forgot that I had played Battletoads and Double Dragon on the gameboy but it didn't leave much of an impression on me besides the toads kicking ass, and it didn't help that the toads looked exactly the same in that game. After I played your mod though, I tried the Genesis version of that and the original game, Battlemanics, and my favorite, the arcade title.

Im wondering what would people say if game had the same style but was brutal like old games.
Well this is about gameplay though, the backlash is over the designs so nothing would've changed.

Dunno abouy you guys, but I've found the new Battletoads kinda...boring/repetitive

This is one of the best examples of trying to hard to be hip and relevant; trying so hard that you miss out on more essential factors to your game.

Is it okay that I like Porkshank? He seems like a fun guy, and the series needs a villain like him; rather affable, to say the least. His design and combo attack are also impressive.

I would really love that to be a option to implement in openbor (and offsets, bbox and attack boxes working as such also)
The first part is doable, the others would be a pain to do. And I doubt that engine scale boxes too.

I demoed this exact effect in OpenBOR nearly 10 years ago. It's nowhere near hard as you think to visually scale entities moving into and out of the screen during gameplay. The other stuff is a lot tougher, but doable. Offsets handle themselves. Collision boxes are a pain but it's nothing super technical, just some % calculations. You also have to account for binds, but again, a % ratio inserted into your bind offsets will handle it. The biggest problem is dealing with jumping heights and falling velocities. You just have to adjust each one at time of event.

As for Battletoads... seems to have the same problem as new SOR. There's just no verisimilitude. It's another frenetic combo laden bore fest where half the time you can't tell who's beating on who, and individual hits have no impact at all.

For beat'm up, this is how stage 1 should be, just filled with weak enemies and a boss at the end, nothing fancy

I think we need more videos showing other stages. Battletoads series have different stages which gives different gameplay but dunno about this one

Porkshank is really good as stage boss. His strength, defense and attacks fit for a boss

I see some  mistakes they could easily fix, walk animations are too slow, feet positions on the ground dont match the velocity and they dont even try, its boring when camera stops you fight enemies then go until camera stops, you fight then go camera stops... thats why i abandoned wait command and im using scrollx for all my games.
Characters are too small, cool effect but their size should be just large all the time, too much wasted space onscreen, it give the feeling like the game is not in correct resolution.
OVerall if characters would not be toads, this is no way battletoads.
