Is it possible to use openbor for Metroidvania style game?

I have seen so many impressive mods for example Bad Ass Babes, Dungeons and Dragons, and of course TMNT ShellShocked on top of many other impressive mod titles.

Is it possible to use the openbor engine in a metroidvania style gameplay. Where the player can reach the and of the screen and it allows the player to move on to another area of the map and the player can return back to which he came by going backwards meanwhile maintaining record of items collected and enemies destroyed.

Im so curious about this. Please share your feedback.

I was looking at Cherry on Top. I am at work so I could not download and try it out. I was looking for a gameplay video on youtube but there is only the one. That would be a good base to start off from especially if its coded to shift from screen to screen like Metroid..
