La-Quien Tales

that is a fantastic attention to detail - and as far as i know eye blinks in 2d games are almost not existant
good work man!

Thank you. So far as I know, it doesn't exist at all, so unless someone beats me to it, I'll be introducing a new feature to the genre. That's actually why I was a bit hesitant to explain how I did it, but oh well.

I haven't touched this project in a couple of months - but only because I have been working hard on the IP in another way, for what I hope to be an interesting surprise coming soon...

as i suspected , eye blinking is very rare on consle games and platformers,
other 2d games that feature these details are mostly PC point and click adventure titles the likes of sierra and lucas arts

first thing that popped into my head as far as platformers is Yoshi's island, a game that to this day has not had a worthy sequel when it comes to the level of 2d sprite manipulation and artistry (symphony of the night comes really close tho)

from what i can see yoshi does blinking only on its idle animation tho - and when it comes to 3d games mario 64 is another game that features it and seemingly only in idle too...

but as far as it seems the technique that you are using might be the very first time - i dont know if i misunderstood the video, but it seems that you character is able to blink even when walking & moving around?

EDIT: watched the video again -

you can patent this mechanic my friend, in some places any other 2d game that does this simple thing might owe you scratch

Yes, that is correct, and that's the unique part of it. I could name you a dozen games off the top of my head that have blinking and other facial animations. That alone is not special at all. But every single one of them (Yoshi's Island included) work by baking it into the sprites. Almost always idle. Sometimes walking, and occasionally a couple of others.

Mine does not work that way. It is, as I said (and I said it at least a dozen times) divorced from the animation. It doesn't matter what Valis is doing - or any of the other characters once they are online. The blinking is on random intervals and with random duration. He can and does blink at any point during during any animation unless I specifically make exceptions. Most polygonal games have this feature to a degree, but as of right now, I am the absolute ONLY creator I know of at all to do it in a sprite based game.

Very good job so far, passed a while since I have looked again this thread, is amazing how DC drawing sprite skills does evolution like a character in a story. Ye being solo dev is kinda hard when you have to draw sprites and codes, I must learn how to draw too since who made the sprites for fire hearts is not between us anymore :(. Anyways very much interesting universe are you building sir DC, good luck and keep up the good work :D

Thank you!

I have this on pause right now, but only the game specifically. I am helping with something else, and you might even see the character crop up elsewhere, but I can't show anything just yet. ;)

The other thing is also acting as a teaching tool for me to get my sprite work more polished and more efficient, so I can come back and make quicker progress.

@Smart Kitty, if you are interested, here are a few character profiles:

I'm not expert at reviewing stuff but I can see a very good and deep character definitions with very detailed info, the way that everything fits in the spot is very impressive, each of all the four characters personal info feels very consistent and fluid. Very sad what happened to the young sister of them, but well after all is a very good and solid character definition with interesting lore. Most stories in animes or shows about siblings are mostly always like "theres two siblings that have a great family affection each other, then suddenly one becomes evil, and then the protagonist has the responsibility of decide if kill its brother or try to save it" I have saw that story a lot lol. Anyways, good luck with your project, we'll like to see it later over here :)

This is absolutely NOT that. The Yuan twins are loyal to their core. It's part of the narrative reason they got to be as extraordinary as they are so young. No matter how dedicated one person is solo, that individual can only go so far so fast. But with another right beside them competing and pushing, it's the secret sauce.

No Cain and Abel crap, no splitting up over power struggles or love triangles.

Here's a general setting. It doesn't have everything (not even close), but gives you a sort of world overview.
