Ripping sprites from pc game

Hey guys i got this old school pc windows 98 game that is 2d.  How hard would it be to rip sprites from a game like this?  Is there a program that can do it?

For starters what game?

not sure what kind of program you expect, the process is the same for any game if you don't have an editor built for the game, just recording video and/or taking screenshots.

You could try Dragon Unpacker, if your lucky it can extract them from the game files.

It can't hurt to search info about the old game and the file extensions it's using.  You might be able to dig up some legacy software that can directly edit/export images from that particular game, or the common asset files that were used by that game company.  Sadly you wont find many games like this thou, but there are some commonly used formats from that era that can be edited using old tools.

Or if you can run it under windows95 you could run it under dosbox and record video.

you can use PCXCLEAN made by elecbyte to speed to automate cleaning screenshots.  You create a palette file with all the colours your sprite needs.  The program removes all the colours that are not in your palette and replaces them with transparent/pink/whatever.  You'll still have to clean some junk out thou probably.  The program is a an old DOS app thou, it might even need dosbox to run, I can't remember OTOH.

You can also use a memory editor like ArtMoney to rip sprites from memory, but it's complicated and tedious.

Its called Chinese Paladin or Legend of Sword and Fairy.. I can record and rip the 98 game fine but the windows xp one the one with super nice graphics doenst work.. Im not sure hot to get it working i might have to change my local language to chinese :(  Its also out on cellphones i think and ipads and such.

So. did you try any suggestions I made? ::)

I've downloaded the 98 PAL version of this game (legally, it's been released as a free game now) and it runs fine in windows.

I've managed to rip all the SFX straight out of the archive using dragon unpacker, no luck with the sprites yet, but I'll keep digging around.  I'll upload the SFX to dropbox for you.

Not sure what game this 'XP version' is, do you have more info?

I'm reading you might need something like Microsoft AppLocale (which is free) to get it running, but your on your own with that.

I found a way to extract all the sprites, (portraits, chars, effects, everything).  ;)

Check it out! !  ;D

I don't have a copy of the other game, but this program will work for all of them, AFAIK.

edit: btw these are all scaled 2x except the cutscene

It keeps everything in one file called DJ.DAT, I didn't have any luck extracting assets from it thou.  Unless another program exists that can read this file you would have to do it the hard way.  By taking screenshots and video captures, then manually cutting out the sprites.  :(

What BeasTie said. I ripped plenty of sprites using anime get and cleaning them in Gimp if needed. Gimp is best for it's tool used to select multiple colors so you can erase many unneeded ones at once. If some character color matches the background, then you have to delete clean that yourself, but the process is much easier from there. I haven't finished them but I ripped a lot of sprites from a Sega Saturn game, which I happen to own physically so I used my disc in the emulator.

x)

Animget to take screenshots would be the solution to me.

I ripped a full character from The Eye of Typhoon for an edited character in Mugen project in the past.
It was not so long or complicated.
Just be sure the game is not scalled when taking screens. pixels have to be displayed at the smaller/real size to take good captures.

BTW this Korean game is pretty fun, I never had the chance to play it with correct sound ???

Thanks for your answers. There are some spritesheets from the author and the history of the game here:

I'll find a way to recover the main characters and some backgrounds...

Thanks even if these sheets are unexploitable due to scalling and compresions.

Anyway for your characters rips, animget would make it without problem.
For BG rips, I'm not a specialist, it' seems harder unless you frankensprite part of BG until you have the full one.

Good luck
