Where to start as an artist?

Hey, everyone! Running a bit behind on this train, so... not sure where to begin.

I'm an artist, mainly producing assets. I'm eager to dive into OpenBor and showcase my work in a real game, but I'm a total newbie with this engine. I get that it mods classic games, but which games are good for a beginner like me? I'm not a programmer, but I can follow documentation.

I'm fine with not tweaking mechanics; my goal is to replace backgrounds, characters, and effects in a functional environment. Any tips on how to approach this?

Thank you.

There's your first hangup.

I get that it mods classic games

No. No it does not.

OpenBOR does not "mod" anything. It is an engine to build games. People tend to make fangames using it and then erroneously call them mods, or they mess with each others' existing OpenBOR powered games. The latter you might call a mod, but not in the sense you are thinking. We don't ROM hack here.

Any tips on how to approach this?

Go to tools, download the edit kit, explode a game, and poke around. Replace a few files to see what happens. Otherwise, your question is a bit too open ended. Try to ask more specific questions, and in the meantime browse wiki/manual (if some part of it confuses you, ask us about that part). That will take you a long way on its own.

Good day to all and thank you!

Thank you, yes is a bit confusing to understand at first sight.

Go to tools, download the edit kit,
Is the Neo Edit Pack the one?

What game title do you have in mind?
I was thinking Sengoku 3 or any title with great combat so I can exploit my character combat animations

Hey buddy, welcome aboard :) Good to see you here.

About where to start, I would advice you to take a look at this, as you can find both 2D and platform templates to start with

You can download two editors to work on your game;

ChronoCrash Modders Tool - more recent, has a lot of tools to help you Chronocrash Modders Tools
OpenBOR stats - a way older tool, which can be bugged at times, but contains some parts of the manual inside it.

The second one is a bit easier to start with, but I would advice you to try CMT first :)

You can read the engine manual here Legacy Manual – OpenBOR Wiki

I don't think we have a Sengoku 3 with an openbor engine yet
Thank you, I guess I shouldn't be that exclusive, I think I should be able to get the hang with the default BoR?

I sincerely hope you will manage to get things working and try to make a first simple project.
For us "artists" it's really pleasing to give life to characters (from scratch or edited from other sprites bases) even if the game system/mechanics are not incredible to start with.
And trust me, it's not that hard to make a first simple level, with characters etc. As an artist (only an artist) I managed to code some simple stuffs with the help of docs.
Yo uonly need a bit of patience and a "lot" of time.

Don't fall in the trap (like me) to try something a bit too complex and having to rely too much on actual coders/programmers.
Getting into more advanced coding for us artists is a pain in the a* , even if not impossible at all.

Good luck.
I hope to have some news of your progress here.

@Bloodbane blank mod BlankMods
try to learn at least one stage

agree with everything @O Ilusionista said above, little addition from me:
keep checking and reading OpenBOR Wiki
and OpenBOR stats is a must for me (until now), too bad it's a bit old

Thank you NED. Im at that "discovery" moment for digital artist when diving into new softwares and techniques that you just want to scream for help, and I appreciate your kind words and support by only taking the time to read this post :)
Im having a fun time and slowly understanding what is this all about.
