There are other methods to achieve this, but some have small problems that can become huge later, and this one offers more features

Advantages of this method:

Optimized character selection screen experience
Commands:
Arrow keys: Move the cursor in four directions
Attack/Jjump: Increases or decreases the palette index
S (Block): Randomly selects a character and chooses it
START/Attack2: Manual character selection

Ability to add, remove, or even change the position of characters on the selection screen

Ease of maintenance: everything you see here is controlled via scripts - the icons, the character names, the original game, their type and trait
