Hi all been playing Bor games for many years but have never known how you go about creating your own BOR game I would love to create my own BOR game I have a few ideas for some games but first I need to know where to start I checked the forum but I have no idea what I need or what I should read first in what order , I assume it's nothing as simple as RPG maker where you just get helpful interface for setting up characters and background sets.

any help in the right direction would be greatly appreciated , do you have to be good at program codding ? like making scripts for rpg maker ?

thanks again I apologize in advance if I have posted this in the wrong place or if I sound too stupid and like noob lol.

The first thing you need is OpenBOR out of the box, download the latest one in the downloads section. Secondly, you need BORPAK and utilities for converting audio and images as well. If you want something basic, you can get inspired by the original BOR, also in the downloads section. Most of the guys here are inspired by it.

For reference, there's the OpenBOR Wiki. Majority of the info is there. Other stuff can be read in the tutorials section of the forum as well. Make sure to search if you have anything in your mind that confuses you before you answer, the answer you might be looking for might already been answered. Try also finding in the Help & Resources section as well.

And finally, welcome to Chrono Crash. ;)

what file is the original BOR ?
I see lots of files for a final fight mod and many other games but not the original bor game that used the snk characters in the streets of rage world.
sorry to be a bother.

There's a search button in the downloads page.

But here it is:)

EDIT: I want to add something though, a sort of pointers before you venture:
  • People now advocate the use of 16bit color modes which can give you less restrictions in color. See the wiki about that.
  • Once you got that done, you can now use PNGs instead of GIFs. Make sure though that you declare globalmap to your entity header. You'll understand that soon enough.
  • OGG is recommended for new modders, since it gives higher quality with a modest file size. For more info on that, see Illusionista's tutorial. Be warned that there are some BOR files that are still required by the engine or else it will not run (primarily complete.bor, menu.bor, gameover.bor and remix.bor). You can convert them using wav2bor.

I can part you with that. For more, there's the help and resources board, the wiki and the more updated manual

I have been reading a few tutorials and nothing is really sinking in ( if only I had a brain maybe I should see the wizard of oz )

Am I right in thinking the first thing to do would be to rip and open the original BOR game with paxplode ?

then just edit the sprites with sprites I want ?

but what do I do when I want to create a small intro story before the game starts or want to add more frames of animation for one of my characters , or add platforms for jumping on , I also have no clue how scripting works or coding
I think it's safe to say my brain can't comprehend the amount of things you need to do to make a simple beat um up , I know all the tutorials are there but it's finding out what to read first because there is so much to read I have no clue what to read and assimilate first , no point in reading it all in one go because none of it will sink in for me ,

are there people on here willing to help make the game with me ?
my dream was to create an Illbleed beat um up based on the dreamcast horror game , but I can't even rip the models from the game , that's why I wanted to know how to use the software (Poser) like mtrain has for his amazing SOR4 game.

I think it's a case of (always the player never the creator) with me.
But I do appreciate the help but I think I have a better chance of winning the lottery then making a BOR game , which is a shame because I always wanted to make my own game , but I even struggle to use rpg maker 2003 and xp.

I'll keep trying today but so far Ive just made a big mess in my BOR folders lol.

Yes, we are always here to help, but...

but what do I do when I want to create a small intro story before the game starts or want to add more frames of animation for one of my characters , or add platforms for jumping on , I also have no clue how scripting works or coding
First things first. Focus in one thing, learn the basic how to start, THEN you worry about platform, intros and scripting.

My personal tip: When I started, I simply took the OpenBOR manual, printed it (in a PDF file) and started to read it everyday in my cell phone, when I was going to or returning from my job. Its a crucial step for understanding how everything works.

Then you can get a simple mod (like the original mod or the NeoPack) and unpack it, to see how it works and start to build your own.

It's actually better if you start small man. You don't want to burnout for not finishing the game because simply you can't do it. Take a small subject matter first like what I did with Shadaloo Dolls. Get used to the basics first, placing enemies in a pattern, doing some simple attacks. Once you get a hang of it, go forth basic scripting and learn from other people's work.

That's all I can say simply. Again, as Illusionista said: "We are always here to help ..."

Hello, guys. (sorry for bad english)

I want to start developing something  in openbor after play and enjoy some games here and from lavalit. But all tutorials i see, say that i need to extract the .pak file, but the paxplode.exe program are not recognized by my DOS to execute, i am using Win8-64bits and try various setences to make it work, but nothing. back to fórum, i see that i need actually the borpack.exe but i dont find the link to download this in anywhere, and i really... really search for this.

So, i have a manual translated to portuguese(my language) but i need the BORPAK.exe to my next step, can somebody help? Thank you

So, i have a manual translated to portuguese(my language)
Welcome. There are several portuguese speaking people here, like me.

So, do you have a translated manual? It could be very very outdated, since I am in charge to update the manual and I do this constantily.

To make it work, you will need to have borpak.exe, packer.bat and paxplode.bat on the same folder. Then you create a new text file with this code:

paxplode.bat NAME_OF_THE_PAK.pak

and save it as EXTRACT.BAT and run it.

I'm still struggling ( because im stupid ) but I wanted to ask what would be easier to use to make a beat em up ? GAMEMAKER or BOR ?

and whats the best place to learn scripting and coding for beginners , because Ive tried to read stuff like that before for beginners and it still doesn't sink in lol.
Should I give up , maybe one day someone will make an illbleed bor game lol.

Game Maker vs OpenBOR is comparing Apples to Oranges. OpenBOR is an engine, Game Maker is an integrated development studio.

Frankly, if you consider OpenBOR to be too difficult to start with, you don't have the slightest chance with Game Maker.

It's a pet peeve of mine when people show up and say over and over how it's too hard or they're too dumb without even making an effort... that's just a more self depreciate form of whining. Read up and start tinkering. The worst you can possibly do is fail, which is a step above everything you accomplished here thus far.

I have been trying it's just there is so much to do I find it confusing were to start and what to move on to next I have managed to unpack the PAK file which reveals all the sprites and backgrounds and other things.

Game development IS and always will be hard work. It will take all your time and it will put all your commitment to it, but we are not here to scare you off, this is to place a point that this is no walk in the park, if you don't you will get stuck and everything will fall into place, including the interest to mod.

Here's some pointers:
Study the text files. Start with levels.txt and models.txt, then study one character (eg. Kula in BOR). Play the game again and see them in action, how the character responds to things and how the levels put together in the game.

Don't be intimidated by the complexity (C++ is more complex than this, and Game Maker is no exception as well) because there is always the references in the OpenBOR Wiki and the DCEmulation link and the search feature here at the forums. There is no excuse that you can't learn here.

As CRxTRDude pointed out, look through them as reference by opening those .txt files like levels.txt, models.txt, etc. and looking at each line of how they are added in them. Look at the manual too, and see how it explains about each command is used.

I'm still struggling ( because im stupid ) but I wanted to ask what would be easier to use to make a beat em up ?
C'mon man, you are not stupid. :) LOL You just get confused and don't know where to start.

As O Ilusionista said:

Try not to think too many things at the same time. Focus on one thing. Try to learn one of them from the NeoPack like making a character first.

For video mode and good colors, download video.txt if you want to change the video resolution and/or color depth. For converting images easily without wasting time to convert one by one frame/picture manually, download PalApply.

If you want to make your own character as a new one, you can go to Spriters Resource or Sprite Database or any other sprite source site to download a spritesheet or a sprite pack of a character you want to use.

Take a look at this if you need help with things here.

EDIT: For a beginner like you, don't worry about scripting. Scripting comes later. First thing you need to do is to learn the basics.

Don't worry about being slow or fast, the most important thing is that you start modding :)

When I started modding, the first thing I did is to bring Ralf Jones from KoF98 to Beats of Rage mod. I didn't bother with levels, scenes, music etc.
After that, slowly I learned how to modify level by toying with spawn coords.
I do all of this for fun so other mod elements i.e scenes, music, enemies, bosses etc are worked on slowly

So just focus on one thing at a time and have fun :D !
