Hey guys! I've made a game for Genre Mash Jam 2021 : Puzzle Puss

The jam requires mashing 2 different genres. My plan was to create run n gun with match 3 elements. However, the jam also has theme which is Reusable. Incorporating the theme into the game as main feature was harder than I thought cause I had 2 genres to be mashed also. Finally, I figured out an idea and it is match 3 with run n gun feature. Player can shoot blocks to create match 3. Destroying one block, inserts one color in bar above. Destroying another block inserts the color while pushes the previous color to the right.
If match 3 is created, all 3 colors will be removed and score is given.
If match 3 isn't created and another color is inserted, the pushed out color will be dropped into field making it reusable.

Hi Bloodbane, your game is very cool, I like the mix between shooter and puzzle game :) . If you wish to improve your game, you can make one room with one puzzle to solve that opens a door to the next room :). A sort story background like a cat is trapped in the mouse castle made in cheese and it must defeat the mouse queen and escape to this building...  ;D

Ugh, I forgot to disable drop off platform ability  :-[. Thanks for showing it, I'll disable that later.

IF only someone would make custom select screen and menu screens that work then maybe openbor would be perceived as engine for different type of games but now its directed towards one typical asthetic, im trying to moev away from that, started making own lifebars and im glad Bloodbane is doing that too.

Is there a way to utilise the screen more so there's not as much dead space at top? Perhaps can have a human in background and hand's peering over like they are playing with the kitten?

Just reminder that it was done for Gamejam so many things are done in simple way. So Puss' projectile is just simple claw.
I don't think cat claw would work as projectile but might work as hitflash ;)
I don't want cat meow while shooting cause it could be real noisy if Puss shoots rapidly.

Hmmm... deadspace is a problem. do you have original sprites or image to fill the deadspace?

You just need to be creative in using what's available to create new genres.
 
Boss 2
I have at least 3 points to help players to survive this boss:
1. pile of blocks maybe can be reduced a little
2. Boss firing bullet speed might be slowed down (medium to slow)
3. give 1 second chance to Puss to save himself when crushed by a block that spawn from above

and I'll be happy if there's a check point after a few stages so we don't always start the game from the beginning

Reduced in stack height?

What exactly should happen during that 1 second?

I'll be happy if there's a check point after a few stages so we don't always start the game from the beginning

which I mean is,
when puss is squeezed by the box that just spawned from above puss will die instantly and the game will have to start all over again
can puss be given 1 second when pinched to dodge? it means that in 1 (or more) second the player must quickly press the right or left button, this way Puss can still be safe
**but this does not apply to the enemy let them stay pinched instantly  ;)

can puss be given 1 second when pinched to dodge?

Sorry, can't do that  :) . It might cause more problems later.

Number of requires matches vary with each level...
If you're actually asking about stack height, remember that Puss can shoot diagonally so he can shoot blocks placed high above  :D

can we just lose 1 health instead of 1 life? because Puss can also die in the air while jump dodging boss bullet and at the same time touched the box that just came down
