You need stickman software from cutoutpro website, i have version 5.7.
When you install/unpack it then run it and choose open scene, then open this walk anim, there you have character to animate, you must choose "control points" its under palette icon like on this picture, then you make keyframes and move control points between every keyframe:
DISABLE canvas layer so it animates smoothly, i only enable canvas layer for easier separation from background.

Ctrl+ mouse button lock control point, shift with mouse click adds point to selection etc. theres readme on website also some tutorials on youtube.
To make your own character you need to have layers.
You can export this tree character with "Export" - selected figure.
Then on startup you dont choose open scene but open Figure.
Then you can see how its made, it mostly images inside of "deform" layers and thats it.Sometimes i add bones but it looks too much like cutout with bones so i tend to leave points how they are.
You can also make points blue and yellow to easier see left/right hands etc but i dont have time to do this so its only good if you have massive amount of control points.

So you can export to different resolutions, i export to uncompressed avi at 1280x720 then i resize the animation to spritesize and convert it to gif in jasc animation shop.
You can make hd hires sprites of course but tahts more work especially with stages.
So each body part is separate png file with transparent BG:

I assemble character choosing "new figure" from beginning menu.I can make vid how to do that its not hard, just press twice on image from "drawing" window then click twice on the very right in "Reference" panel and chose your png, then add  "Deform" layer (from layers panel on left side where "drawing panel was),
Then in draw order menu on left drag and drop image to deform layer , then create control points and click on deform layer and choose "Setup" to pick which control points will control that deform layer and thats it, you go thoriugh this with every body part.
 
thanks for sharing that valuable info. I have some ideas for designs for a 2D platform style.

small question: how do you draw the sprites? using a tablet or "directly on the pc"?
I can draw well on paper, but not very much directly on pc. Never tried a tablet before though.

About that tree, it really shines. What about giving him some small fruit as a projectile weapon? or some small bats coming out from his head.
 
Thanks ill definitely use that bats idea so tree would spawn small bats enemies.
Im using tablet to draw but its just regular old tablet without monitor.

Its not easy to make proper wings animation tho from this angle so i had to use solid black ones

You can use escapehits and set script in enemy's SPECIAL2 to move up or down to avoid bullets or any attacks.

Speaking of UZI (or it's Mac-10 instead?), how come it doesn't shoot any bullets at all?

No problem IMO your BG is OK.
It's pretty much matching the characters graphic style with less flashy colors, so it's good.
For the future stages try to use several color schemes, so the adventure will be eveytime in a different mood/atmosphere.

thx, i planned to add empty shells jumping out of the weapon but i dont know about the bullets themselves, maybe for other bigger weapons.
 
nice animation on the bat!!

You could make a "night stage" with some stars as part of the background, but in truth, some stars will fall on the player's area.

btw, do you have some plot planned? I wonder what would that be!
 
cool idea, i have ups and downs when making own animations for characters, sometimes i finish animation but it doesnt look good in game and i want to give up and think it looks so bad but then i start from scratch or fix it for a couple of hours then suddenly i think its best walking anim ive done yet, its very weird from one end to the other ,frustration to satisfaction, i dont know how many of you have these ups and downs when making mods but dont give up too easy, even if it looks so so bad then try again and youll be surprised.Sometimes i regreted starting character cause anims didnt looked good but i fixed some and i was glad i did it so... its really weird but this is kinda addictive and you want more and more and better and better and it never ends  ;D
 
I setup platformer stage to use it as template for all platformer levels and works very nice  ;D I have just invisible panel and will just swap bg images then design platforms using entities in level so now every stage design would have its own platformer level, its gonna be every second stage
