Masters of The Universe: Eternian Battle

Complete Masters of The Universe: Eternian Battle (OpenBOR) 1.2.0 (Feb 13, 2025)

Project is completed.
Checkpoints are slightly challenging but it's doable.

As for this game, I can memorize enemy positions but I can't accept losing life just because of getting hit by small enemy then falling to hole.

Yes, sometimes some small touches like that gives a really different feeling to the game.
Particularly considerion how BOR/SOR sounds are a very usual gimmick.

Checkpoints could improve the experience.

As unfair as losing a life by getting hit by a small enemy and then falling into a hole is, to me that was part of the experience while playing old school NES Ninja Gaiden. The difference in this game is that He-Man can point his sword in different directions, even while in the air. I think I gave He-Man a pretty decent amount of moves and I came up with those moves after doing some testing and asking myself "What would make this part less challenging?". He-Man has a variety of moves which are ALL explained in the "Practice Mode". It is up to the player to identify a situation where they can take advantage of those moves. I have a feeling that not many people tried the Practice Mode. I even included a PDF file named "Practice Mode.PDF" where ALL the moves explained in the Practice Mode are also explained in this file. You could put this PDF file in your mobile or tablet and look at it while you "pause" the game, kind of like having an "Instruction Booklet" from back in the day.

Also, I remember soon after I uploaded a demo for this game I saw a video on YouTube of someone beating the whole thing with one single life, something I had not been able to do at the time. Eventually I found other playthrough videos on YouTube where the player was able to beat the entire demo (5 levels) with a single life. MOTU: Eternian Battle is not as difficult as any of the NES Ninja Gaiden or Castlevania games and you can save the game. But yeah, the game is pretty much like a coreography.

So, I just uploaded a newer version of the game (Version 1.2.0). The link should be in my signature (Game Jolt). I'll try to upload it to Chrono Crash again but, the last time I had some issues, it got stuck on 8 %. Just a few changes on this version like, I replaced 2 of the "default sound effects" and got rid of the Time Over/Game Over sound which was also a default sound. There are also 2 cutscenes that are actual videos (webm). I figure a way to adjust the volume while capturing the video so it's much closer to the in-game volume. For some reason when OpenBOR plays .webm files it seems to lower the volume quite a bit and, as far as I know, there's no way to adjust the volume with the OpenBOR Engine.

My dear friend you say used "Practice Mode" ok but its hard game like Ninja Gaiden hahahahaha But the game becomes... frustrating, you lose and you always go back to the beginning. You need to fix that mistake...

Sorry dude, I was just playin the game last night and I don't think it's THAT hard. I find Ninja Gaiden to me more challenging and, it didn't even have an option to save the game...

I agree with you. That is not a "mistake" by any stretch. it's a design.

Btw, another thing you could make a try is to make the lifebar "less BOR" too

You can make a background for the lifebar and add it on the character icon.

I thought about changing the icon/lifebar and for something reason I forgot about it. I always wondered if you could add vertical lines to the lifebar so it would look more like a Ninja Gaiden lifebar.

yeah is a "design" but a frustrating design...and GaBoTiCo with only 3 lives your finishing the game??
Yeah, I've been able to finish the game around 3 or 4 times while "testing" it. I died quite a few times, which is why there's an autosave feature. Whenever you see the "GAME OVER" screen you can just go to "LOAD GAME" in the main menu and that option should take you to the very last level you played.

GaBoTiCo updated Masters of The Universe: Eternian Battle with a new update entry:

Uploaded the newest version of MOTU: Eternian Battle!

I updated "some" sound effects and improved minor things like some entities not showing at the proper depth. Some people have complained that the game is too challenging so I added a message right before you start the story mode that explains the game has an auto-save feature and you can just go to "LOAD GAME" to go back to the very last stage you played. In this message I also explain how you go back to the beginning of the level when you lose a life since I have no idea how to add...

Hi,I just wanted to say thank you for making this game. I've waited since the 1980s for a good He-Man game, but it seems Mattel will never do it and it's up to fans like us to make the games ourselves.
My pleasure! I also made a platformer with OpenBOR called "Masters of the Universe: Eternian Battle". I'm pretty happy with the way the game came out BUT, some people find it too dificult. And there's also another OpenBOR game based on the Filmation Series which is a beat'em up and it's GREAT to be honest but I haven't finshed it yet. The game is called "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe" just like the cartoon.

Can you turn cheats on? I am not a masochist type gamer. But I really dig your game!
Sorry, dude! I had to remove cheats because a saw a video on YouTube of someone playing the game and they had turned cheats on and the game became glitchy because of it.
I'm uploading a video to YouTube as I'm writing THIS message that I'm hoping helps anybody having a hard time with the game.

Tha game has an auto-save feature. Whenever you see the "GAME OVER" screen, after that you can go to "LOAD GAME" and that should take you right back to whatever was the last level you played. Also, ALL of He-Man's moves are explained in the "Practice Mode" and the game comes with a .pdf that explains the same moves that are already explained in the Practice Mode. The idea of having a .pdf was so that you can pause the game and view it on your phone, kind like having an Instruction Booklet from back in the day.

He-Man can dodge and block attacks. During the DODGE animation he's untouchable. And you can also point his sword in 8 directions.

That is one of the reasons I never let cheats enabled on my games (the other is I don't like cheats, they defeat all my hard work).

One advantage of version 4.0 is that some cheats – which are in the engine to make life easier for game developers – automatically cause bugs in the game with certain scripts, such as scripted slams like Touch of Death (or something like that). And I remember the devs commenting that there are no plans to "fix" this because it's not broken – the cheats were made to help developers, not for players to cheat :)

Exactly, those are meant for testing, not real gameplay. One of them actually introduces a bug on purpose - a multi-hit glitch. That and in 4.0 you can individually control which native cheats are available and when. In 3.0, you either have a cheat menu or you don't.

So I published this game back in 2024. It's a platformer heavily influenced by Super Castlevania 4, and I must admit that I'm kind of dissapointed since it's just NOT making that much noise. The game I published before this one (TMNT Recolored & Extended) is "kind of" well known and has been "overall" pretty well received. Even "MOTU: Eternian Fighters" (a game that I just published a demo for a couple of days ago) I feel it's making more noise.

Some people complain about the game's difficulty so I made this video that shows the game's intro and the first 2 levels to show that in my "humble" opinion the game is NOT that hard. I guess this game is what some people call "NES Hard". But unlike, any of the NES Ninja Gaiden and NES Castlevania games, this game has auto-save feature. Also, I gave He-Man a pretty decent variety of Special Moves which make the game less challenging. Like for example, there's an anti-air move that's very effective against large enemies, a lightning attack which damages EVERY enemy on the screen. He-Man can also dodge and block attacks. During the "DODGE" animation he's untouchable. He-Man can also point his sword in 8 directions. ALL his moves are explained in the "Practice Mode" which on the title screen literally says "Recommended". I have a feeling not that many people tried the Practice Mode. I've seen a couple of Playthroughs on YouTube and absolutely not a single one of them uses any of the special moves. Also, the enemies will tell you when they're gonna attack you. Their facial expression will change right before they do. I think it's up to the player to identify a situation where they have to dodge, block or attack. I hope this helps anybody who's having a hard time with this game.
